Broke's the New Black: Making Up for Autumn

One of my favorite things about the change of seasons is the dark colors that come into trend in the fall. Darker nails, deeper lips, and smokier eyes are more appropriate in colder weather since lighter and fresher colors correlate with summer.

Since I’m making the transition to richer pigments as temperatures fall, this blog is dedicated to just that. How to make-up for autumn:

Try a Deeper Lip Color I’ve always been hesitant to change up my normal lip routine (simply a nude base and gloss) to the bold statement that dark lips create. But, this winter I’ve decided to make the jump. I’ve been playing around with deeper colors and they are surprisingly flattering (once you get used to it), you just need to find that right shade.

Check out Make Up Tips: How to Wear Dark Lipstick  for further details and extra confidence. Still hesitant to make the switch? Start off with just a dark gloss! It won’t be as obvious as lipstick.

Smoke Out Your Eyes Of all the make up looks in the world, the infamous “smokey eye” is definitely one of the most sought after looks and ironically one of the most intimidating to achieve. To fend off raccoon eyes, practice with softer colors like grays or browns before jumping to black.

Here’s 10 Fantastic Smokey Eye Tutorials. Got the hang of it?  Change it up by implementing blues or purples. Cover your lid in either of the two then blend with grays, browns, or black. (For more eye shadow help, check out Saturday’s upcoming blog: Eye Shadow 101)

Define Your Cheek Bones It’s really easy to make your face seem more angular with bronzer or blush. Apply bronzer in the hallow of your cheeks (the area pulled in when you pucker your lips). Add blush on the top if you want to add color to your skin.  Using pigments with a little glimmer make your face seem dewey and fresh, while matte powders can sometimes make the cheeks look like they were layered on.

Although all of these make up trends are great for anyone, you may need to pick and choose which to use together. Don’t overload on bold looks!  If your eyes are extra dark, try a nude lip. — just like dark lips may need a more natural eye. Play around and see what works best for you!
