It’s finally fall (and since in Arizona we only really have two seasons, it’s basically winter already), so it’s getting quite chilly out. That means everyone is whipping out their scarves, gloves, hats and sweaters, all of the knitted variety. It seems to me that when people think of knitting, they typically designate it as the hobby of grandmothers. I can’t say that I haven’t thought this way either, but my mom is an avid knitter, and seeing how dedicated she is to her craft has made me realize that it is an art just like any other. And on top of that, it’s a wearable art. What could be better?

Thanks to the help of my mom and a few other knitters I know, I’ve mapped out the best knitting stores in the greater Phoenix area. Keep in mind there are quite a few more than just the ones I’m going to highlight. I chose my selection based on reviews, location, yarn selection, and people who work there.

The first place I want to talk about is The Fiber Factory. As I am not a knitter, I am told that this store is the one to go to. Open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, this store is known as “the Southwest’s most complete yarn shop.”  They have classes at all levels, in which students can come to master all techniques, such as knit, purl, casting on, binding off, and changing patterns among others. The store is also known for its products, housing items for knitting, weaving, spinning, and crocheting, as well as selling books, patterns, and other products.  If you ever find yourself on West Main Street in downtown Mesa, make sure you check out this gem of a yarn store!

Another store that is one of my mom’s favorites is Knit Happens, located on 8100 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale. Open late on Tuesdays and Thursdays (until 9 p.m.) this knitting store seems to be a hot spot for many knitters in the area. From what I’m told, the store has a very welcoming environment. Women come to the store and sit down together just to knit. The store also has great “high-end” yarn, perfect for any project. Come to Scottsdale to check out this store Tuesday through Saturday.

Tempe Yarn and Fiber, located on University Drive between Rural and McClintock is another great choice for all your yarn needs. First and foremost, this store is located just a short walk or bike ride from ASU’s main campus, which makes it a great location for students. The store is open seven days a week, and until 8 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, which makes it quite convenient for the student who works or has class late. Classes are available for knitting, crocheting, spinning, dyeing, and weaving, and available for all levels.  All sorts of products are available for purchase and local artists are also showcased.

These three stores give you a great introduction into the life of yarn and knitting. For more information, questions or comments, please contact me at fbreisbl@asu.edu.
