Spark'd TV: Got to Be Fresh

A few days ago, my friend opened my eyes to the world of Workaholics, and since then, my life has been changed. My inner immaturity finds myself laughing at every possible juncture during any given episode. If you haven’t watched Workaholics, it’s a show about Blake (Blake Anderson), Adam (Adam Devine) and Ders (Anders Holm), “three friends who work together as telemarketers from 9 to 5, live together from 5 to 9 and party together 24/7.” When these three aren’t working their jobs at TeliAmeriCorps, they can most likely be seen partying on their roof, getting into shenanigans, getting high and coming up with wise remarks about the world.

The most interesting part of the show, however, is the fact that all three of these guys live together and write the show in real life. Adam Devine says, “we write the script, but then we sort of just throw it away.” He also states that at least 40 percent of the show is improvisation (check out the interview with the Associated Press here).

The trio got their start doing online comedy sketches for a company called Mail Order Comedy, which they believe is the main reason why the chemistry is so strong on set. Devine still works for Mail Order Comedy, doing stand-up shows in New Jersey and Florida. Check out all of their videos for Mail Order Comedy here.

The latest episode follows Adam, Blake, and Ders as they go to Montez’s pool party, and have to escape the community patrol officer because they crashed a scooter into someone’s garage (typical behavior). They also get into a roommate fight about who’s borrowing Adam’s Rogaine, who stole Blake’s jumbo size limited edition condom, and who’s wearing Ders’ breathable mesh boxers.

My favorite character has got to be Ders. Comedy Central puts it perfectly when they describe him with this: “He can be seen cruising in the Vo’, or patrolling the streets on his recumbent bike as the neighborhood watch, but someday hopes to achieve the American Dream: to drive an Escalade and own a state of the art Panini press. Constantly tying up loose ends, Anders can end up in knots, but when he loosens up he’s the guy that stumbles home the next day with a little grin, a little shame and a great story.”

The second season ends on Nov. 22, with new episodes airing Tuesday after Tosh.0. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me at mlkelle3@asu.edu.
