ASU junior sprinter Chris Burrows didn't care that it was a cold and blustery day at Sun Angel Stadium on Saturday.
The transfer from Lake Erie College recorded a career-best time of 20.65 seconds in the 200-meter dash, finishing second. Burrows was noticeably pleased after the race.
“I tried to stay relaxed like coach has been telling me to,” Burrows said. “I executed perfectly. It's definitely the best race I have ever run.”
The race was the fastest and most competitive of the day, as sophomore Ryan Milus finished just behind Burrows with a time of 20.67.
The ASU throwing team, led by redshirt junior Jordan Clarke and redshirt sophomore Anna Jelmini, had a solid day as well.
Clarke, the defending outdoor national champion in the shot put, earned a mark of 19.66 meters, just shy of his outdoor personal best. The All-America athlete Jelmini blew away the competition with a throw of 58.14 meters, good enough for the second-best mark in the nation.
Kraft was impressed not only with those two, but also with the entire throwing team.
“We expected this out of Jordan and Anna,” Kraft said. “But for our team aspirations, it was important for CJ Navarro and Ashley Lampley to have a good day. It was good for Nathan Estes to have a personal record in the shot put. We have to have those backup points.”
Although this was the final home meet of the season, Kraft says there is still a lot left to work for this season.
“For us, the Pac-12s and the national championships are our focus, and that's the kind of senior day you want to have,” Kraft said.
The Sun Devils will continue their outdoor season next weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
