This weekend, the Arizona Center for Germanic Cultures is hosting its 7th Annual Phoenix Old World Oktoberfest. Although the German culture is underrated, there are many great reasons to attend this cultural event.

  1. The competition: The weekend is full of many different competitions, ranging from the best Polka dancer, to best dressed in traditional garb, to the warsteiner bier stein contest, in which men and women compete to see who can hold the most “steins,” or glasses that hold 16 oz. of beer. Another traditional contest to check out is the annual Alphorn blowing contest. Contestants get the chance to see who can master the traditional German instrument, and anyone can sign up.
  2. The Food: Ranging from traditional German food to American cuisine, the food at Oktoberfest is sure to satisfy you. They offer bratwurst, frankfurters, pretzels and a festival favorite, apfelstrudel.
  3. The Beer: What better addition to a great meal than a 28 oz. souvenir plastic “Das Boot?” Offering an expansive biergarten, Phoenix Oktoberfest offers the traditional taste of German beers.
  4. Great for everyone: With bounce houses, face painting and an all-ages chicken dance contest, this event is great for families and groups of any age.
  5. The Price: For only $5, you gain admission into the park (12 and under are free) and beer and food can all be obtained on a college budget.
Phoenix Oktoberfest is Oct. 5 from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Oct. 6 from noon – 9 p.m. at the Margaret T. Hance Park, 200 East Moreland, above the deck tunnel. It’s an easy trip from campus by taking the Metro Light Rail to 19th and Montebello and heading northeast. It is time for students to take some time off from the stress of school and life and enjoy the music and culture of Germany this weekend at the 7th Annual Old World Phoenix Oktoberfest.
