Police: Convicted felon found in possession of firearm

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Friday:

  • A 24-year-old Tempe man was arrested Aug. 19 on the 2000 block of East Rio Salado Parkway on suspicion of possession of a weapon by a prohibited person and marijuana possession, according to a police report.

Police contacted the man while in the process of conducting an investigation, and when asked if he had any weapons on him, the man said he did, according to police.

Officers searched the man and found a semi-automatic handgun in the man’s waistband, according to the report.

He also had marijuana in a small plastic bag inside his wallet, police reported.

A background check revealed the man had been convicted of facilitation to commit possession of dangerous drugs for sale earlier this year and was on three years probation, according to the report.

Police said the man’s parole officer was contacted and confirmed the prior conviction and probation.

The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, according to the report.

  • A 52-year-old Tempe man was arrested Aug. 18 on the 1000 block of East Orange Street on suspicion of aggravated assault and burglary, according to a police report.

In the early morning hours, a witness saw the man enter an apartment, and an investigation revealed the suspect had assaulted the apartment’s tenant while inside, according to the report.

The man punched and kicked the tenant, causing fractured ribs and “serious” trauma to his face, according to the report.

Police said the tenant was intoxicated and passed out on the living room floor of his apartment and was unable to defend himself.

The man was arrested and transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, according to police.
