I am lucky enough to see the growth of three generations of women happen right in front of me.
Growing up as a South Asian girl has taught me what is wrong and what is right. But it has also taught me that how my mother grew up is nothing like how I have grown up or how my grandmother grew up.
My mother and grandmother were both married young. My grandma was married at the age 15 and my mother was married at the age of 20.
And I'm over here just writing my blog and not even thinking about marriage at least till I'm 26 or older. My grandmother and grandfather's relationship is the epitome of bowing to your husbands every command. But don't get me wrong they love each other very much and he's an amazing husband, just as he is a grandfather.
My mom and dad's relationship is somewhat similar but what they both share is their view on divorce. Both these generations do not think divorce is okay.
While I on the other hand, believe divorce is necessary in cases of cheating, abuse, etc.
Education is also another factor, because both my grandma and mother did not get a degree. I, however, made it clear from an early age that girls get things done and getting a degree is one of them.
And now, cooking. I think cooking is what divides this house. My grandma is the master chef. I seriously think she belongs on the Food Network and my mother is, well, she makes really good dessert and salad. I can get down in the kitchen, but I'm mostly good at heating things up because I'm "Ms. College Student" over here! South Asian women are usually referred as to the perfect wives, but this new generation is seen as the working girl.
