Police: Firemen respond to smoke at Barrett dorms

Firemen responded to smoke coming from Barrett, the Honors College on Monday night, ASU Police said.

Assistant Chief of Police for ASU James Hardina said at approximately 9 p.m., smoke began pouring out of a vent above a grill in the kitchen area of Barrett, the Honors College.

The smoke came from a build up of grease in the vent, Hardina said.

ASU Spokesperson Julie Newberg said in an email that no students were evacuated and no alarms went off.

The exhaust hood functioned properly by redirecting the smoke to the outside of the building, Newberg said.

Hardina said they needed to clean the vents to prevent possible fires and similar situations from happening again.

“It was a lot of drama, but it was no big deal,” Hardina said.
