Farmers Market returns to Tempe campus

ASU students will see old vendors and new ones along with the implementation of a new interactive center at the Tempe campus's farmers market.

The Global Institute of Sustainability will coordinate the Sustainability Speaker’s Corner, a 10-minute talk to students every day the market is held at 12 and 12:30 p.m. with a question and answer session afterwards, said Judy Schroeder, a member of the Farmers Market Core Implementation Team.

These talks will teach students how to live more sustainably.

“Our hope is that people can get their lunch and sit down to learn a little bit about some form of sustainability,” Schroeder said.

The team hopes the new interactive center will bring in more students to the market, Schroeder said.

“We predict we’ll get about 600 people per (market) day,” she said.

The interactive center will bring in speakers bi-weekly on topics including composting and urban chicken raising.

Farmers Market Ambassador Emily Alvarez, an urban planning student, said she'd heard good things from fellow students.

“I have had people tell me they're excited to come to the market to hear the guest speakers,” she said.

The farmers market has added new vendors, and most of its previous sellers are returning, Schroeder said.

She said the market has gained a new bread vendor, the Bread Basket, as well as the Shrimp Viche Man, a local company that sells shrimp cocktails. The market has some new ready-to-eat vendors as well.

Craig McGalliard, the owner of Shrimp Viche, said he came to the farmers market to help advertise his business, which launched last September.

“The more markets we do, the more people become familiar with our products and we build a client base,” McGalliard said.

The farmers market has moved from outside the Memorial Union to the Student Services Lawn.

The move was necessary because of ASU's new walk-only zones, said Farmers Market Ambassador Sky Eigen, a sustainability student.

"It was a necessity," she said. “Because of the walk-only zones, cars can’t come on (campus) anymore."

Along with the new vendors, the interactive center and location, the ASU Well Devils have put together Farmers Market Challenges, in which students have to do certain tasks for gift cards. The first task is eating two cups of fruit a day for two weeks.

Schroeder said they will have an information table at the market in which students can sign up to complete the challenges. They would then come back two weeks later to get the gift card.

Schroeder said she doesn't know the second challenge, but the third one will be the similar to the first but with vegetables.

The $20 gift card will be available to use at the farmers market.

The farmers market began Oct. 8 and will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every other Tuesday, ending Nov. 19.
