Under a new program, ASU and an online learning group will be offering freshmen the opportunity to get a full year of college credit without having to apply to the University.
In an announcement Thursday, ASU and edX announced this revolutionary program, called the Global Freshman Academy, would allow students to pay for the class only after they pass the online class and choose to take it for University credit.
Each credit will only cost $200, which is significantly cheaper than the $480 to $543 per credit hour online students not in the program pay now, according to a statement released Tuesday.
The University said they plan to have general studies classes including mathematical studies, humanities, arts and design, social-behavioral sciences and natural science. One class, Introduction to Astronomy, is already open for enrollment and will start in August.
ASU President Michael Crow said in a statement that the program gives more students opportunities to get a higher education.
“At ASU, we’re committed to academic inclusion and student success regardless of a student’s family circumstances. We will not be successful unless we reach talent from all backgrounds around the world, and the worldwide reach of the revolutionary edX platform allows us to open this program to anyone with the drive to obtain their degree,” Crow said. “The Global Freshman Academy will empower students to prepare for college and achieve what they may not have thought they could."
