Tempe Undergraduate Student Government Senate kicked off the 2015-2016 school year with a successfully brief meeting, discussing and voting on big ticket items such as the annual budget and swearing in members to leadership positions.

Current Senate President Nicholas Haney led his first official meeting with a transparent agenda. Haney, who was a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Senator last year, made a conscious effort to inform his at-capacity audience of the duties of Tempe USG as well as the meaning behind the unique terminology.

One of the major items on Tuesday's agenda had to do with the organization's budget for the current school year. The nearly $2 million budget was approved unanimously, giving funds to campus-wide programs such as Devils In Disguise and the Safety Escort Service.

In addition to budget approvals, senators also had the duty of confirming members to various leadership positions. All 22 positions were sworn in unanimously, filling roles such as Special Events Director to Shay Kak and University Affairs Director to former College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Senator John Oyas.

The next Tempe USG meeting will be held Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in MU 228. All students, both undergraduate and graduate, are encouraged to attend.
