An overnight shooting about a mile from ASU's Tempe campus injured three people Friday, the Tempe Police Department said in a written statement.

Officers and detectives responded to the area near the Tempe Center for the Arts shortly before midnight, according to the statement from Tempe PD.

Two people riding a scooter along the south side of Tempe Town Lake were approached by "multiple suspects," who attempted to rob them at gunpoint. The victims shot at the suspects, and one of the suspects shot back, the statement said.

The suspects left the scene before police arrived, according to the statement. Police later found and contacted the suspects.

One victim and two suspects sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital, the statement said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"There is currently no active threat to the community," the Tempe PD statement said.

This story is developing and may be updated.

Correction: A previous version of this story stated that Tempe PD said two University students were "involved in the investigation." On Oct. 14 at 8:48 a.m., this statement was retracted from the story, as Tempe PD said they can no longer confirm at this time whether University students were involved.
