Just before the turn of the millennium, the gaming-console war was in full swing with Sega's release of the Dreamcast. It was big and bulky, and replaced dull, grey plastic cartridges with shiny, reflective compact discs. A pioneer in fledgling online console gaming, Dreamcast was a whole new way to spend time.

The last time Phoenix had an independent film house, Steven Spielberg owned the box office with his first Indiana Jones movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Sam Raimi’s “The Evil Dead” shocked audiences with unprecedented gore, and it was still OK for Mel Gibson to lose his shit, as he did in “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.” The year was 1981.

A low rumble, like a hungry growl, traveled across Tempe Town Lake Sunday, March 27, as the eighth annual Arizona Dragon Boat Festival took over the waters. Teams of 20 paddlers, one drummer and one steersperson manned narrow paddleboats adorned with dragonheads and tails in a modern take of ancient tradition.

The murder capital of the world is only a short drive from Phoenix. It’s a town where children go to school, where mothers tote bags of groceries home, where fathers go to work and come home tired — just like any other town. But in between the mundane hours in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, are streaks of violence so lurid you wouldn’t believe them if they were read to you from a book: beheadings, massacres, murders in daylight on public streets. But maybe, producer Charlie Minn hopes, you might believe them in his documentary, “8 Murders A Day.”

Lush red roses. Delectable chocolate truffles. Plush teddy bears. These are a few things that are normally associated with Valentine’s Day. Imitation is said to be the ultimate form of flattery. From everyday consumers who fashion their wardrobes after their favorite pop culture icon to movie stars who try to evoke the lore of actors before them, people do it all the time.

As a major metropolis, Phoenix has been on running full-steam urbanization over the last decade. From the continued development of the west side’s Westgate City Center and multimillion dollar football stadium, to the glitz and glamour of the recently unveiled CityScape in downtown Phoenix, progress in the Copper State has not been all bright lights and show.

People have always been fascinated by flight. Greek mythology tells the story of Icarus, the son of an imprisoned craftsman who fashioned wings from wax and feathers to escape captivity. The ill-fated Icarus would go on to fly too close to the sun, melting the wax and plummeting to his death.

At first light, the Rally to Restore Sanity is ambiguous at best. It’s a rally about nothing and everything all at once, thrown by the "Daily Show," Comedy Central's political-farce powerhouse. Here are the facts: Jon Stewart put it together, it’s in Washington, D.C. and it’s happening on Oct. 30 from noon to 3 p.m.

There is a lot of work that goes into being undead. Of course, before obtaining this status you have to die first; no small feat in and of itself, but that’s the price that needs to be paid if you want to be a zombie. Earlier this year I got the chance to scratch off one more thing on my bucket list when I got the call to be an extra in a friend’s zombie movie.

Picture this: It’s some calendar year B.C. You and your friends cram into a wooden amphitheater surrounding a dirt field. It’s midday and the sun is high, but there’s a cool breeze carrying a waft of sweat and iron through the crowd. Just as you find vacant seats, the audience erupts in cheers as two figures emerge onto the dirt field wearing polished armor and brandishing swords and tridents. A brutal battle ensues. Blood is spilled. The loser dies, the winner goes home a hero and the crowd relishes in the spectacle.

In the very near future you might find yourself paying Chrissa Carolyn thousands of dollars to analyze your mind. You might find yourself spending a pretty penny asking her for advice on your sex life. Or, just maybe, you’ll remember her name when you hear her syndicated sex-talk program on some satellite radio station you subscribe to. In the meantime, you can see her perky smile and nubile breasts in October’s edition of Playboy magazine for just $5.99.

It’s 1997. Gas is $1.22 a gallon, boxer Mike Tyson bites off a piece of Evander Holyfield’s ear, a civil jury finds O.J. Simpson liable for the 1994 murders of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman, and a trio of blond haired, prepubescent brothers infect the airways with a little ditty called “MMMBop.”
