On any message board, you’re going to see your average cast of characters. The Courage Wolves, Karate Kyles, or Charlie Sheens are all Internet regulars. Today, I’m going to talk about a meme that is close to my heart: Rage Guys.

4Chan, Reddit, and thousands of other online communities are the backbone of Internet culture. This week, we’re going to take a look at what compromises these sites and how to start getting involved.

Last week, I took a look at what it’s like to switch from Android to an iPhone. In this week’s “Best of the Web,” we’re going to take a look at some apps that every new iPhone user should at least take a look at.

This week, I had a funeral for my Motorola Droid. I loved that phone and have always backed Android as the free and open choice for smart phones. Unfortunately, having a cracked screen for three weeks made me look for alternatives at Verizon. After walking into the store, I realized that the $199 iPhone was the cheapest smart phone I could walk out the door with. After five seconds of deliberation, I sucked it up and made the decision to get the iPhone 4. What follows is what I’ve noticed as a long time Android user coming over to iOS.

Last week, I covered what an RSS feed was. Now, we are going to take a look at some creative ways to use them in this week's "Best of the Week" (BOTW).

You know that one friend who is up to date on the latest Internet memes and reads thousands of blogs a day? Ever wonder how do they do it? Would you spend that much time scouring the web for information? The secret comes in by using RSS feeds to quickly read a bunch of content quickly.

In my experience, finding time to write is one of the hardest things for anyone to do and this is doubly true for college students. On top of writing papers for class and discussion board posts, who can find time to keep a record of their life or start tracking creative ideas? In comes 750 Words to save the day.

In the first Best of the Web (BOTW get it?) segment we’re going to take a look at some Flash games that don’t require a Facebook game.

So, I’ve been hesitant to admit that I like some Facebook games. I was afraid that I’d have to turn in my “hardcore” gamer card and just start playing Bejeweled for hours on end. I couldn’t get invested in a game that was all about clicking things at set intervals. Then I found Tetris Battle, which feels like the first game that uses Facebook effectively.

This month, the ASU Skysong Program and the Venture Catalyst at ASU opened up the Skysong Hackspace to students and community members in the Tempe/Phoenix area. The space was a recently vacated area that the Skysong Center donated to the public. The hackerspace includes a bunch of tables, chairs, free power and electricity, and most importantly close access to the professionals at the Skysong Center.

With the ASU Skysong Hackspace opening this semester, I thought it would be a good idea to explain what a hackerspace is. Wikipedia’s definition states that it’s a location where people with interests in computers, technology, digital art, or programming can meet and collaborate. The great thing about going to ASU is that we have the hackerspaces Gangplank, CO+HOOTs, the newly formed ASU Skysong Hackspace, and the soon to be opening Launchspot right next to campus.

It’s finally happened. The simple tools to destroy our security have spread to the masses and the world is over. You might have heard about a Firefox add-on called Firesheep, which is able to gather password from Facebook, Flickr, Google, Amazon.com, Twitter, Wordpress, and Yahoo if you log onto a unsecured Wi-Fi network with someone running the program. It’s not like we all use a giant unsecure Wi-Fi network at ASU right? Oh wait… Let me be clear: I don’t think that we should lock down our networks with a bunch of byzantine Wi-Fi encryptions that have already been broken. By taking security into your own hands, you will be much safer.

TV and I have always had a love hate relationship. Sure I love South Park and The Daily Show, but it somehow always get scheduled at the exact wrong time. That’s why streaming and downloading what I want to watch on my own time has been the only way I get the chance to watch TV.

Language 101 classes are truly the devil. First, a TA who is fresh out of their undergrad classes and usually has no teaching skills whatsoever is at the front of the class. To add on to that, so many people are taking these classes, you are more than likely going to be taking it at 7:30 a.m. Finally, foreign languages are some of the hardest things you can learn. They require hours of dedication just to memorize the vocabulary, let alone learn the grammar and pronunciations.

Memes, as scientist Richard Dawkins defines them in "The Selfish Gene," are “a postulated unit of cultural information, that is passed from person to person by non-genetic means.” In layman’s terms that means an idea that is passed around a group of people through any form of human contact. This means things like rituals, media and even conversations on the street all allow for the creation of memes.

As students growing up in the digital era, we are all content creators. From posting blogs, to taking pictures and videos, to programming applications, we are making work that is by default protected by a full copyright. Now on the flip side of that, I’m sure every almost every teacher we’ve ever had has told us, “Don’t use content from the web, you don’t own the copyright.” What if I told you there is a place to find all kinds of free usable content and a way for you to share your work with the masses as well?

When you think of having basic job skills in the 21st century, what does that mean? Of course we have the old stand-bys of reading, writing and arithmetic; but what about being able to shoot a photo, create a film, or make a simple program? With the advent of new technologies, people need to step up their games when it comes to learning new skills. Even with my love of technology, programming has always been a huge barrier that I've needed to cross (and I bet it's even scarier for the majority of non-computer science majors). In this article, I'm going to present you with some free tips and resources to get you on the path to becoming computer programming literate.

So we are a lucky bunch at ASU, instead of having some terrible Outlook mail program the administration chooses to go with Google Apps. Gmail is the Google email program, as you more than likely know, and it is highly customizable. I've got a few tricks that will cut down on the amount of work it takes to get to your emails.
