December is arguably one of the most celebrated months. Stores are filled with Christmas décor, plenty of trees are decorated with ornaments and TV screens display back-to-back helpings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “A Christmas Story”. But this winter month is also the proud owner of another very important, overshadowed day: World AIDS Day.

With the insufferable diminishing of the middle class in a society that insists you either sink or drown, students may begin to ask, “what am I really going to school for?”

How many of you care about the way you look? I know I do. Who out there has put on an outfit, looked in the mirror, shook his or her head in disappointment, and put on a new outfit only to repeat the process until an hour has passed? What about bleaching teeth to make them whiter, those $300 pair of shoes bought to keep up with the latest fashion or, my favorite, sleepless nights complete with an aching neck from when I have a ton of rollers in?

Have you ever heard the following joke? A graduate with a science degree asks, “Why does it work?”A graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"A graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much does it cost?" And a graduate with a liberal arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

We’ve all heard them before, some of us so many times we can recite them in our sleep. Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband? To have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward, until infidelity do you part? No, that’s not right.

Close your eyes and imagine with me, if you will. A girl walks into your 9 a.m. class. She averts her eyes to the floor as she quickly finds a seat. She seems to be about your age; a college student perhaps, but some things about her stand out. Her hair is disheveled and tousled, her cheeks are caked with a brown grime resembling dirt, and her left shoe has a large hole in the front. You observe this young woman and how greatly her appearance contrasts with that of yours and your peers’. Now open both eyes and come back into reality. What are your thoughts?

Remember when you heard the latest song on the radio and you had to sit and wait for hours for it to be played again? Or the feeling you felt as you tore open that new CD because you’d waited so long for it to come out? Now think way back to how you set the timer on your VCR to record the season finale of your favorite show because if you missed it there was no way to watch it again. Do you remember how you felt after finally getting what you’d been waiting for? Now jump back into the present. Seems like ancient history, right?

Question: Why is there so much conflict in the media?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever looked at your tuition bill and shaken your head. Raise your hand if you’re tired of seeing loans in the place of grants and scholarships. Ever hear that college graduates can’t find work? Raise your hand for that too, and keep it raised if at one point in your college career you’ve questioned if all the rising debt and hair-losing stress was worth it (be honest now). I don’t know about you, but my arm is getting tired.
