This weekend marks one of the most hated and beloved holidays of the year: Singles Awareness Day (or some know it as Valentine’s Day). For some, it is a great day for couples to buy each other gifts and expensive dinners to showcase their love for each other. For others, it’s a reminder that they have no one to buy them gifts, and that they’ve been single for too long and will probably be forever alone. After you realize that you won’t be getting a Valentine’s card garnished with candy from all of your classmates, realize that there are many other ways to spoil your most important valentine: you.

When national or global events happen, the quickest way to find out about it on social media. Things start trending and suddenly everyone knows about it. This could be something tragic like the recent event in Paris or something more positive like the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. When events like this happen, social media further spreads the word by allowing people to place banners over their profile photos in order to show their support for these events.

Amber Rose, former wife of Wiz Khalifa and

Angeles this weekend. Now, the name sounds pretty scandalous at first, but that
is exactly the point!

Sunday night, Viola Davis was the first black woman to be awarded the Emmy for "Best Actress in a Drama," and her speech was moving. On the verge of tears, she makes a statement that is not only true in the industry of film and TV but in media in general: there is a lack of opportunity and visibility for women of color.

Having a child can be one of the happiest times in a woman’s life. Bringing a child into the world comes with both emotional and physical changes that can affect a woman forever. Of course, the more noticeable changes are physical: the glow, the growing belly and often times a little weight gain.

Dining out is usually a luxury for most, reserved for special occasions or simply because you got a little extra money in your paycheck.

Claymation is a classic form of animation that most attribute to Tim Burton. They are dark, yet happy at the same time; how do they do that? Inquiring minds want to know. When I stumbled upon the recently added "Mary and Max," I could tell that it still had those same dark tones of other claymation pictures, but it wasn't as PG as Tim Burton's films. "Mary and Max" definitely isn't a movie for kids because the themes are a bit complex.

Thousands of students commute to all of ASU’s campuses, with the Tempe campus being the most trafficked. This doesn't even include the number of visitors that come to campus for any number of reasons. Driving is the primary form of transportation in the metro Phoenix area and even with the emergence of the light rail, parking on campus remains in high demand. There are numerous structures and parking lots around campus, yet somehow finding parking is still a big to-do.

It’s sad to say that life and midterms have gotten in the way of properly watching Netflix, but I was finally able to watch "Horns". I’m not quite certain what kept attracting me to indie movies. Perhaps it’s because most of them do not get sufficient credit. The image of Daniel Radcliffe on the cover automatically attracted me to the movie. He’s has done many films, most of them indie films, but I will forever see him as the “boy who lived”. With nothing in my mind but the hope that he will pull out a wand at some point during the movie, I still watched the movie with an open mind. I must admit, I was surprised on so many levels.

As the New Year rolls around, people create vision boards and lists of things they want to improve during the upcoming year. They pledge to themselves that they will get rid of all of their bad habits and create new, good ones. Every year, by February, most fall short. The moment people remember to write 2015 instead of 2014 is when they start forgetting to pick the salad over the donut. Now that it’s February and the gym's finally clearing up, people need a reminder as to why they should stick to their New Year’s resolutions.
There’s a reason we create New Year’s resolutions. We do it because we are unhappy with our guilty pleasures and want to improve our lives and the lives of those around us. So why do we lose momentum so easily? It’s because we make them just to make them. When the New Year comes and everyone else says they’re going to be more fit or do more community service, we hop on the bandwagon. Only make resolutions that mean something to you. Change yourself for the better, but in a way that you know that will help you. If you want to get more involved with your faith, do it because you want to, not because anyone else is doing it.
Now for the many who have made flaky commitments for the New Year and have already fallen short, here’s a reminder of why should pick your resolutions back up. Think back to the motivation you had on Jan. 1. Think about how proud you were of yourself when you jogged a mile. Think about why you chose to make this difference in your life. If you remind yourself of the importance of your resolutions, you can continue to have that drive as you make your way through the year.
Although the next New Year is a ways away, there are steps you can take today to make more solid resolutions in the future so you don’t fall short. First, create a vision board. With a vision board, you can put it on your wall and see your goals every day. Having a visual reminder of what your goals are makes them seem more attainable. Secondly, give a time limit. The “new year" is pretty broad; that could mean two or five or 10 months. Set time limits for your goals. With time limits, you can check the progress of your resolutions and make adjustments if necessary. Third, don’t make stupid goals. If you love chocolate, don’t tell yourself you’re going to stop eating chocolate all together. That’s unrealistic and really won’t do anything for you. Set goals that have meaning to you. Try explaining why you chose your resolutions to someone. If you can explain why you decided on a New Year’s resolution, you’ll know that you’re making for the right reasons.
It’s never too late to have “New Year’s resolutions” because, let’s face it: The year is still pretty new. Look back at the goals you made 7 weeks ago and start them up again. Use all of these tips as a reminder of what you want, and know that you can do it.Reach the columnist at ybrewste@asu.edu or follow @jbrewzki on Twitter.Editor’s note: The opinions presented in this column are the author’s and do not imply any endorsement from The State Press or its editors.Want to join the conversation? I decided I wanted to watch "Mr. Nobody" when I came to the realization that Jared Leto looks different in just about every movie he stars in, and the movie only confirmed my theory. Other than knowing Jared Leto was the star of this movie, I knew nothing else about it before watching, as I do with most movies I watch. Let me tell you, this movie was something else. I can honestly say that "Mr. Nobody" was unlike any movie I’ve ever seen.

Every year, as Feb. 14 approaches, the colors red and pink emerge wherever you go. Chocolate, flowers and oversized teddy bears fly off the shelves of every store. For some people in happy, or even not-so-happy, relationships, they like to enjoy each other and an overpriced meal at their favorite restaurant. For others, it’s a chilling reminder of how single you are and how you have been for a long time and will forever be.

When I realized "School Daze" was on Netflix, I was really excited. I love finding throwback movies on Netflix, because who doesn’t like watching the occasional old movie? Though I’d never actually seen the movie, I had heard about it from my family. My father, mother, and some of my aunts and uncles were Greek and, when they were in college, and "School Daze" was said to be hilarious satire of the hazing that was said to have happened back them. Since I did not get the obvious pleasure of going to college in the 80s (because let’s be honest, Run DMC and the Brat Pack are still some of my personal favorites), I didn’t have any real knowledge of what a college campus was like back then aside from what the movies told me.

Even though it is only a few weeks into the semester, I have found that getting back into the swing of things hasn’t been easy. While it isn't always the case, one would think that watching Netflix would be a distraction. It always helps take my mind away from the stress and gives my mind a little break so I can be more productive later. When I am feeling overwhelmed, sometimes you just need a feel-good movie to put you in the right mindset.

On Aug. 1 2013, ASU issued a policy that makes all ASU campuses tobacco-free. Throughout campus, you can see signs reminding students that they can’t smoke any tobacco products — smokeless or otherwise — yet students are still seen smoking.

I definitely never thought of myself as someone with an addictive personality, but after getting access to Netflix’s instant streaming I have found that I was gravely mistaken. More often than not, I find myself watching entire series. I’m talking six or seven seasons, within weeks, or staying up until 3 a.m. watching movies. How my grades haven’t dropped is beyond me.
