Every day we’re bombarded with thousands of advertisements, images, information, propaganda, political literature, petitions or some other variant of the aforementioned. And when you break it down, they all aim to do one thing: convince you that your signature, your involvement, your awareness, your “click to learn more,” or your inclusion on an email newsletter list and not more than five minutes of your time will either inspire or block some form of social change.

As you present your significant other with a Build-A-Bear or some other token of affection likely to be embroidered with a Hallmark logo, don’t forget to wish another special someone a happy birthday. This can’t be achieved via their Facebook wall or through a text message. It’s simpler than that. Walk out into the desert sun, take a deep breath, appreciate the saguaros and the beauty of your surroundings and let it out: “Happy 100th Arizona!”

You’ve heard the argument from thirsty 18-year-olds a million times or more. “If we’re old enough to serve in the military and die for our country, why aren’t we old enough to go to a bar and drink?” And it carries some credence.

Bravo to junior guard Trent Lockett’s return to the ASU basketball team. Lockett entered Thursday’s game averaging 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Lockett hadn’t played for the Sun Devils since he injured his ankle on Jan. 14 in a game against Oregon State. Without their leader, ASU went 1-5 and only averaged 52.2 points per game, after averaging 64 with him. This year has been very disappointing for the team, but regaining the presence of their leader has to be an encouraging sign for the Sun Devils.

As Tuesday came to an end, Americans once again had the opportunity to celebrate, comment on, like, retweet, resent or simply marvel in the majesty of yet another display of the power of the people and the strong foundation of Democracy. In a 2-1 ruling, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco overturned Proposition 8, a California initiative that recognizes marriage as a legal union only between heterosexual couples.

Bravo to Todd Graham for compiling a solid recruiting class in his first season as ASU football coach. With just 48 days to recruit players , Graham was able to put together a very impressive list of commitments. As a generation, we have grown up online. We turn to Google and Wikipedia for wisdom and advice. We trust them to answer any fleeting questions or frivolous curiosities and to give definition to the momentarily undefined. Twitter almost transcends the title of “social network” in favor of a personally impersonal journal in which users are given 140 characters to divulge impulsive ejaculations of thought or perhaps just to share what they ate for breakfast.

If you haven’t seen or heard numerous quotes and references pertaining to the “Sh-t (insert stereotype) Says,” videos by now, you’re probably a hermit--or dead. Either way, the idea far surpassed “viral” status. It spread through popular culture and across the Internet at a speed rivaled only by a presumably innocent baby from the U.K., “Charlie,” accused of biting his older brother’s finger.

Last year, ASU unveiled the “It’s Time” campaign. Unfortunately, the football team ended the season on a five-game losing streak and did not embrace the challenge bestowed upon them by the athletic department.

Boo to citrus plants in Tempe attracting roof rats. “Rif-raff/ roof rats/ are more annoying than Tempe’s /stray cats. If only the oranges fell on the street, would the rats still see a delicious citrus treat?” But without invoking the melodic grace of Disney’s “Aladdin,” make sure to harvest all of the edible oranges and other citrus fruits from your trees or donate before the roof rats take up residence above your home.

How important is your image? Would you be willing to fight legislation in order to receive certain aesthetic services? Furthermore, would you be willing to risk the hygienic standard of the services you receive in order to say, trim up that unibrow?

Boo to a complete and total shutdown of the ASURITE network and ASU online services. After a security breach in which an unnamed hacker(s) downloaded an encrypted document that may or may not have contained usernames, passwords, social security numbers, or some other form of pertinent student, faculty, financial or university information, the university issued an alert that the system had been “compromised.” Twenty-four hours later, we’re back up and running, our passwords have been reset and we can take a collective sigh of relief. Phew! Now, get your homework done.
