What have we done to Cuba? In 1948, the U.S. backed a military coup that overthrew President Carlos Prio Socarrás and placed Fulgencio Batista in power — and built Fidel Castro. The 1954 coup d’état in Guatemala overthrew President Jacobo Arbenz — and built Che Guevara. We’re finding enemies in the reincarnations of our preventative, interventionist military policies.

Robert Rodriquez’s new film “Machete” came out last weekend. I’ve been really excited to see it ever since its fake trailer was released in 2007 with “Grindhouse,” leading to my countless visits to YouTube to watch Danny Trejo chop people up and to watch Jessica Alba be hot.

A federal judge last Monday issued a temporary ban on the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, citing federal law that dictates taxpayer money not be used for experiments that destroy human embryos. This overturns an executive order made by President Obama last year that expanded federal funding for the research.

It’s completely within the law for a mosque to be built near ground zero. No matter what your opinion is, having the federal government prohibit its construction goes against private property rights and sets a very dangerous precedent. Therefore, I’m just passively opposed to the building of the mosque on a purely emotional stance.

It’s lucky for the First Amendment that the DISCLOSE Act did not pass last Tuesday. The bill seems innocent enough, attempting “to prohibit foreign influence in federal elections, prohibit government contractors from making expenditures with respect to such elections, and to establish additional disclosure requirements with respect to spending in such elections, and for other purposes.”

Every day I wake up and ask myself why our government is so big, and every night I go to bed and ask myself why it is so ineffective. And then I always end up remembering that my questions actually answer one another.

Let me start by saying that terminally and seriously ill patients should easily be given medical marijuana. That isn’t debatable.

My friends, Arizona has decided to go green.

Last week, we talked about how the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has absolutely nothing to do with global warming, despite recent attempts to correlate the two.

The reason we need to talk about cap-and-trade today is because of the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. To set the record straight: The oil spill is a terrible tragedy, and BP is clearly to blame for the drilling rig explosion and the oil spill that followed. However, we do need to put some things into perspective.

H.R. 2159, or the “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009,” is a major party foul sponsored by Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.

The government’s misguided logic tells them we need more financial regulations in order to ensure that banks don’t end up being too big to fail – in other words, “too-big-to-not-be-given-a-bailout-package.” This means allowing the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and Washington, D.C. to play an even more special role in policy-making, and, in turn, making the central bank more centralized. That makes as much sense as cutting down trees to use less paper.

Amidst our current economic crisis, the Senate cleared a bill two weeks ago described by Politico as “the most sweeping overhaul of the nation’s financial regulatory system since the Great Depression.” Hidden under the veil of protection for the American people, the bill will amount to endless bailouts due to its lack of regard for the personal responsibilities that should be expected of companies.

The first few days of my summer break consisted of a lot of sleeping, watching television and more sleeping. Just how I like it. I didn’t think life could get any better until a few more days passed and I was proven wrong.

President Barack Obama is like Santa — that is, if Santa gave you a bunch of presents you didn’t want and then asked you to pay him back $12 trillion in the next 10 years because being a woman is no longer a pre-existing condition.

In a world so densely filled with cookie-cutter bands and outrageous characters, it’s good to know Tempe is the home to a breath of fresh air for the music scene. Soft-spoken and full of passion, Ryan Osterman, singer-songwriter of Owl & Penny and Sownbones, is one of the few small voices trying to give our future generations something worthwhile to listen to.

If President Barack Obama’s term in office has helped the Republican Party in one way, it’s in the common disapproval that has now created a passionate renewal in the true conservative movement. The annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) once had an attendance of merely 200 people before Reagan’s presidency, but the 2010 political conference brought in an astonishing 9,000 people to listen to honored speakers’ thoughts on issues pressing the nation.
