After winning their first two games of the weekend against San Diego and Sonoma State to advance to the semifinals of the Triton invitational, the ASU water polo team fell to No. 6 UC Irvine 10-9. ASU would go on to win the consolation final against CSU Northridge to place third overall in the tournament. The loss against UC Irvine marks the first loss for ASU this season, after starting off their season 6-0 at the UCSB Winter Invite. The Sun Devils now have a 9-1 record. Saturday: The Sun Devils would start off the tournament strong, notching a blowout win against Sonoma State. The Sun Devils would get off to a hot start, scoring eight goals in the first half alone, while only allowing the Seawolves one goal. The starters would be rested for the more pertinent games that were ahead, but ASU would still go on to score eight more goals in the second half, beating Sonoma State 16-2. Sophomore and freshman attackers Izabella Chiappini and Claudia Abad both recorded hat tricks in the blowout win. ASU’s high octane offense would continue, with a high scoring first half against San Diego, scoring nine goals, and only allowing three. However, after a strong second half rally by the Aztecs, the Sun Devils were able to stave off the late offensive onslaught, beating San Diego 12-11. Chiappini and sophomore center Alkistis Benekou both had hat tricks in the victory. Redshirt junior goalkeeper E.B. Keeve was pivotal in the win, with 14 saves. Sunday: As head coach Todd Clapper predicted, ASU would face UC Irvine in the semifinal, pitting the No. 5 and No. 6 ranked teams in the nation against one another, ASU’s first true test of the season. With neither team wanting to lose, the score would be close all game long. The game featured five lead changes and seven ties, with overtime being needed to decide a victor. With 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime, UC Irvine held a two goal lead, with Chiappini scoring a consolation goal as the game ended. The Sun Devils would suffer their first loss against a highly ranked team, falling 10-9. Chiappini would record yet another hat trick, with freshman attacker Lena Mihailovic also recording her own hat trick. After suffering a bitter loss against UC Irvine, the Sun Devils rallied to beat CSU Northridge 12-7 in the consolation game, finishing third overall at the tournament. Chiappini would continue her hot streak, scoring five goals in the victory, the seventh time she has scored three or more goals thus far this season. ASU (12-11, 4-6 Pac-12) upset No. 6 Arizona (20-3, 8-2 Pac-12) 71-68 on Saturday, just a week to the day that the Sun Devils accomplished the same feat against the then-No. 2 Wildcats last year.

The No. 5 ASU water polo team is looking to continue its perfect 6-0 season heading into the weekend.
Even with the electrifying second half and overtime performances by freshman guard Tra Holder and senior forward Shaquielle McKissic, ASU fell to Oregon 68-67.
After coming off a tremendous 73-55 win against Oregon State where ASU (11-10, 3-5 Pac-12) dominated in the first half, the Sun Devils will be hosting Oregon to finish out the home stand.

At the end of the half ASU led 40-23, with five players scoring more than five points apiece. The Sun Devils were on fire from deep, managing to go 8-for-18 from 3-point range. Early in the first half, ASU went on a 11-0 run, where three players scored back to back-to-back 3's. The Sun Devils scored 24 points off of 3-pointers in the first half, one point more than Oregon State scored in the entire half. “It’s good to make outside shots against a zone,” ASU coach Herb Sendek said. “Like we've said all along, when the ball is going in, it makes a big difference. Our guys are shooting the ball with good confidence and getting pretty good shots.” Senior guard Bo Barnes finished the half with nine points, making 3 of 5 attempts from deep, with all of his field goals coming from beyond the arc. “I think he is really learning how to work,” Sendek said. “He is putting extra time in after practice, he's getting a lot of extra shooting work in, his confidence is growing, he is getting more comfortable, and I think his improvement has been amazing through the month of January. He's really playing excellent basketball for us.” Freshman guard Tra Holder and senior forward Jonathan Gilling each contributed two shots from deep, and junior guard Gerry Blakes also got in on the action with a three of his own. “Jon and Bo give me a lot of layups,” senior forward Shaquielle McKissic said. “That’s the beauty when guys are knocking down shots.” “It definitely helps with the spacing.” Barnes said. The Sun Devils also shot 100 percent from the free throw line in the first half, with McKissic hitting all four of his free throws. Junior guard Gerry Blakes also went 2-2 from the charity strike. ASU would not look back after their blowout first half, finishing the game with a healthy 18 point win. Although the hot shooting from deep would cool off, ASU was able to produce in other ways. ASU would continue their impressive free throw shooting however, going 18 for 23 from the charity strike, finishing at 78.3 percent. After three days of intense play, the ASU water polo team has a perfect record, beating all six of its opponents, half of which are ranked teams, including No. 11 Cal State Northridge, No. 13 UC San Diego, and No. 14 UC Santa Barbara. Sophomore center Alkistis Benekou and sophomore attacker Izabella Chiappini led the way in scoring this weekend, with Benekou scoring 19 goals, and Chiappini scoring 14. Friday ASU 9, CSUN 6ASU 15, Cal Baptist 9 Benekou and Chiappini both scored hat tricks in the game against CSUN after a sluggish ASU start. All of Chiappini’s goals game in the second half. Benekou and Chiappini’s impressive scoring continued into the second game of the day against Cal Baptist, where both players again managed to score a hat trick. Freshman attacker Lena Mihailovic recorded her first collegiate in the victory against Cal Baptist. Saturday ASU 9, UC San Diego 5 ASU 16, Azusa Pacific 8 Chiappini scored her third hat trick in as many games in the win over San Diego. Redshirt junior goalkeeper E.B. Keeve’s stellar performance was a big reason why the Sun Devils were able to hold on for the win, with Keeve stopping nine shots in three quarters of play. Seven of Benekou’s 19 goals came in ASU’s game against Azusa Pacific, where ASU won 16-8. Benekou became the fifth Sun Devil in history to score seven goals in a game, matching the ASU school record. Previously her highest scoring game had been six goals. Sophomore attacker Stephanie Contreras attained her first career hat trick in the win against Azusa Pacific, supplementing Benekou’s scoring showcase. Sunday ASU 19, CSU Bakersfield 6 ASU 12, UC Santa Barbara 7 The Sun Devils saved the best for last, showcasing a powerful offensive onslaught against CSU Bakersfield, with 11 first half goals. Mihailovic scored a career high five goals to lead ASU in the 19-6 win over CSU Bakersfield, after scoring her first career goal in the 15-9 victory against Cal Baptist. Fellow freshman Taylor Bertrand and senior attacker Petra Pardi added their own hat tricks into the game. It was Bertrand’s first career hat trick. ASU had a close call in the game against host UC Santa Barbara, trailing 7-6 with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. It was then that the team mounted an insurmountable comeback, scoring six unanswered goals in six minutes. Keeve stopped a season-high 16 shots in the win. The Sun Devils were able to hold on for a 12-7 victory to come out with a still spotless record on the weekend, a great start to their season. The Sun Devils have two weeks off before they head back to California to take part in the UCSD Triton Invitational. The Sun Devils play their first opponent of the UCSD Triton Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 7 in San Diego. The ASU water polo team is about to embark on yet another season, in which the team looks to improve upon its stellar finish to the previous season. Because of the team's top five placing, the Sun Devils are ranked fifth going into this season.
The ASU men's basketball team will be traveling to Berkeley to play California after defeating Colorado, where the team shot 55.3 percent from the floor, the Sun Devils' best shooting night since 2013.
The ASU men's basketball team had a much better game this time around after its breakdown against Utah.
ASU’s (8-9, 0-4 Pac-12) loss to No. 8 Utah (14-2, 4-0 Pac-12) was to be expected, considering they were facing a top-10 team. The fashion in which they played was not something to be expected however.
