LET’S DEBATE ON FACT, NOT NIGHTMARE SCENARIOS When listening to opponents of allowing students to legally carry firearms on campus, it is important to note one simple fact: on the over 30 campuses across the country that allow students to carry firearms, there has not been a single violent incident involving firearms since each campus began allowing legally-carried firearms on campus. The arguments being made by anti-gun professors and campus administrators are not based on empirical evidence but instead on irrational nightmare scenarios that have not transpired. Likewise, constant gun violence has not erupted in malls, bars, and parks as a result of loosening restrictions on the carrying of firearms in public spaces as many antigun advocates predicted. In fact, violent crime (including gun violence) has dropped significantly since Arizona first began issuing concealed carry permits en masse in the 1990s.
