Out of Bounds: Goodbye for Now

At the beginning of my freshman year in the ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, I never thought I would have so many opportunities my freshman year. I’ve interviewed athletes, gone to countless basketball and softball games and, of course, written this blog.

ASU baseball erases ninth inning deficit, downs Utes in 10

Heading into this weekend, the No. 8 ASU baseball team was 0-11 when trailing after eight innings this season. That all changed Friday night against Utah as the Sun Devils (26-12-1, 9-7 Pac-12) scored two in the ninth and added another in the tenth to pick up a 5-4 victory over the Utes (16-21, 5-14 Pac-12). The Sun Devils were trailing 4-1 heading into the eighth inning, but junior outfielder Kasey Coffman clubbed his fifth home run of the season to bring the deficit to two. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Trever Allen led off the ninth with a single and the Sun Devils loaded the bases with no outs after a walk to pinch hitter freshman David Graybill and a throwing error that allowed sophomore shortstop Drew Stankiewicz to reach. Freshman first baseman Dalton DiNatale struck out, but Coffman provided a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one. Junior third baseman Michael Benjamin then came up and delivered the game-tying single off Utes junior closer Nick Green. ASU freshman closer Ryan Burr, who was named to the USA Baseball Collegiate National team Thursday, came in for junior starter Trevor Williams, who allowed six hits and four runs in his eight innings of work. The Utes went down in order in the ninth, taking the game to extras for the Sun Devils for the fifth time this season. The first two Sun Devil batters in the tenth didn’t reach, but it was Allen who once again started the rally with a single. Freshman outfielder Johnny Sewald then walked to bring up Stankiewicz, who singled up the middle for the game-winning hit. Burr made it interesting in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but struck out junior first baseman Trey Nielsen to end the game. With the victory, the Sun Devils improved to 4-1 in extra-inning games. The Sun Devils and Utes return to action for the second game of their series Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
