Business job fair provides professional environment

The College of Business College Council is sponsoring a career fair for the first time that is designed to set a more professional atmosphere for students to interact with recruiters.

The event, which is scheduled for Sept. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m., is limited to business students.

The fair is entitled “Come For A Job, Not a Frisbee,” and the college council explicitly prohibited recruiters from bringing any promotional items such as frisbees, key chains or buttons.

The council intends to set an atmosphere where students can fill out applications, have casual interaction with recruiters and possibly receive an interview.

Alex Denisenko, president of the college council, said the first-ever event would facilitate interaction between students and recruiters beyond a normal career fair.

“This event is of great value to both students and recruiters,” Denisenko said. “This event is business casual and will be a great compliment to the Career Fiesta.”

ASU Career Services also sponsors a yearly career fair known as the “Career Fiesta,” which this year will last four days, from Sept. 11 - 14, and will be held at different hours each day in the Memorial Union. More than 100 recruiters will attend the Career Fiesta.

Amanda Couturier, a first-year MBA student, said that the new business college event is a good way for students to see what options they have.

“Anytime there is an opportunity to meet with a recruiter it’s a beneficial thing,” Couturier said.

Denisenko emphasized that other differences between the College of Business career fair and the Career Fiesta is that the business college event will last only one day and will be located in the Alumni Lounge of the Memorial Union.

Numerous corporations have already registered for this event. They include Intel, General Mills, Ford Motor, the Internal Revenue Service and Xerox.

The business college is also sponsoring a “Resume Critique Workshop” that will be held on Aug. 28 from 4 to 5 p.m. and on Aug. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m. The two training seminars are designed to help students compile their resumes, which will be included in a “resume book” that will be sent to recruiters.

The resume book is intended to give recruiters a chance to preview the qualifications of the students that attend the fair.

To be included in the resume book, students enrolled in the College of Business must submit a resume to BAC 210 by Aug. 31.

Jason Salmon, a first year MBA student, said the event would provide a much-needed service to students.

“This career fair will be a good way to interact with companies on a personal level,” Salmon said.

While the resume seminars are optional, students are encouraged to attend.
