As of this summer former professor of English at ASU West Glenn Irvin is the newly appointed dean of the ASU East campus.

ASU East divided the roles of dean and vice provost for academic affairs over the summer, and new Dean Glenn Irvin said he is ready to help guide the campus in the direction that University President Michael Crow has planned for it.

Irvin spent the past five years as an English professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at ASU West and was also the provost for academic affairs for the campus during that time. He said he kept a close eye on East while working at the west campus.

"It is a great small campus, and I had the opportunity to watch East grow the past five years," Irvin said. "I'm excited about being a part of the direction that President Crow is envisioning and making it happen."

Irvin's role is to oversee the operations, faculty, programs, research and the overall direction of East in step with Crow's mission. Students at the east campus identified some immediate concerns for Irvin to deal with, including the amount of hands-on experience at the campus.

David Schwalm, ASU East vice provost and former dean, said splitting the positions of vice provost and dean was a necessary move that would address and take care of students' concerns.

"ASU East needs someone in each of these positions to focus all of their efforts on the individual needs of each area," Schwalm said.

Mike Mader, director of student activities, said he was excited to see a full-time dean at the east campus.

"It will allow us to do things we couldn't do before," he said. "To achieve our goals at East, we needed two people to carry out the jobs of vice provost and dean of East."

Irvin was the vice provost of academic affairs and dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, and was also the associate vice president for academic affairs at East Texas State University, now Texas A&M-Commerce. He earned his bachelor's degree in education at ASU, where he also received his master's and doctoral degrees.

Irvin said he was optimistic that he and his staff could handle the challenges facing them as the semester begins.

"The campus is a wonderful place to be. It has outstanding leadership, excellent faculty and staff, and is on track for an exciting mission," he said.
