ASU student died of gunshot wounds

The ASU student found dead near Prescott this weekend died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday evening.

Brandon Rumbaugh, 20, and his girlfriend, Lisa Gurrieri, 19, were found dead in a sleeping bag in the back of a pickup truck two miles off Interstate 17, 30 miles north of Phoenix.

Sheriff's office Lt. Steve Francis said it was too early to tell the motive or if the apparent homicide was a random killing.

"We're not ruling anything out at this point," Francis said in a press conference broadcast on Valley television stations.

Yavapai County officials told reporters on Monday that there were no apparent signs of trauma to either of the bodies.

Tuesday, though, Francis clarified those statements, saying the officers responding to the scene set up a perimeter and couldn't initially get close enough to the bodies to identify signs of trauma.

Francis said the department was still processing evidence and following "lots of little leads but no strong leads."

"We're chasing stuff from literally all over the state," Francis said, adding that a lack of physical evidence was making the investigation difficult.

Rumbaugh was a pre-business undergraduate at ASU. He worked at a Mesa sports club. He and Gurrieri shared an apartment in Scottsdale.
