There is at least one on every campus: The guy who drives, dresses and grooms like he is from another decade.
He may be a rockabilly type, with big lamb chops and a skeleton-head gear shifter. Or, he may be the '70s retro dude, sporting a full head of thick, black, curly locks.
The rockabilly guy had his hot minute back in 1996, when the movie Swingers made it cool to wear shiny lounge shirts and wallet chains. Well, the retro guy, who likely sings the '70s badass anthem "Kung Fu Fighting" while doing high kicks in the shower, may have his moment in the sun very soon.
The Search for Starsky
E-mail, fax or deliver a photo of you and your '60s or '70s hot rod, along with your name and contact information to Solomon & Friedman: kellyaz@sf-ad.com, 602.553.3200, 602.553.9966 (fax).
Starsky & Hutch, a new comedy that hits theaters March 5, may do for roller-disco, hot rod wannabes what Swingers did for young, wannabe Rat Packers.
So for all you guys who think you can take to asphalt like Detective Dave Starsky, this is your moment of glory. To celebrate the release of Starsky & Hutch starring Ben Stiller and Owen
Wilson, Solomon & Friedman Advertising and Warner Bros. are looking for ASU's very own Starsky.
Now before you boys with tight denim jackets get excited, listen up: there is more to it than just the right Starsky look; you got to have the right Starsky car.
The contest, which will last from today until March 2, is open to all ASU guys who can not only hold their own as Starsky for a day, but who also own a vintage, mint ride.
The car that will win definitely will be a 1974 Ford Grand Torino, but being that there are very few of these Starsky-esque mobiles cruising the street, any late '60s to '70s hot rod will do.
As the winner, you will receive official Starsky & Hutch promo goodies, 10 VIP seats at an advance screening of your choice and a TV appearance during an on-air promotion.
Not only will you win all of those goodies, but if you're over 21, you will be the talk of the town as the guest of honor at the Starsky & Hutch bar night at Dos Gringos and Sugar Daddy's. You will arrive decked out in funky Starsky style, and you get to keep the fancy duds, which you can wear over and over again to impress the ladies.
If age permits, ASU's own Starsky will arrive at Sugar Daddy's and Dos Gringos on Thursday, March 4.
And ladies, if you happen to know a goofy but cute guy, whose always under the hood of his '60s or '70s hot rod, make sure to enter him in the contest; if he wins, he will not only be Starsky for the day, but your super-'70s stud for the night.
