Style Views: Furry boots a bad move

Walking around campus, you'll see lots of people committing fashion mistake after fashion mistake and just barely getting away with it. If you want to stay in the clear, avoid the following fashion no-nos.

DISCLAIMER: The opinions expressed in this article are solely those of the author.

Ugg-ly boots

These ugly shoes are supposed to being dying out by now, but apparently they are still hot on campus. At first glance they may seem kind of cute. Who can resist something soft and fuzzy, and somewhat comfortable, right? However, no matter how comfortable they may be, it can't be ignored that Ugg boots, which look they should be worn in artic temperatures, are impractical in Arizona. When I see girls on campus sporting Ugg's in 100 degree weather, I can't help but wonder how they are not roasting in them. Pair Ugg's with a mini skirt, summer dress, or a jogging suit and you've only added to ridiculousness of the outfit. Maybe Ugg's would look normal in someplace that is actually cold like Wisconsin or Montana, but in Arizona? Not a chance.

Ponchos

Who thought that this horrible trend from the '60s and '70s would come back? Ponchos are sweeping local stores through out the area, and they are hardly cute. It is beyond me why someone would want to wear a something that looks like a small blanket with a hole cut in it for your head. Not to mention, most ponchos come in hideously bright colors, and are made in knitted styles that resemble something your grandmother could have made. The fringe that borders most ponchos is not attractive either, and appear clumpy and tangled. The one size fits all style may also appeal to some people, but hardly anyone can pull off this look, and makes most people look like they are trying to hide something under their shirt or bulky in the middle.

Jelly Bags

Although they are another one of the latest trends to be seen on campus, it is hard to determine why these bags are so popular. For example, what outfit goes with a giant, brightly colored rubber handbag? I also wonder why someone would want a bag that is essentially see-through, allowing everyone to see what is in the purse. I personally would rather keep things like that to myself; a girl has to have some secrets.

Smock/Tube Dresses

A fad started by celebrities, many students on campus wear smock dresses as swim suit cover ups or around campus with jeans. These dresses also belong in the one size fits all clothing category, and are far from flattering. The smocking and elastic along the top of the dress makes it look like it will barely stay on anybody. Likewise, the gathered waist and loose bottom of the dress make even the thinnest person who wears these dresses look like they have a bulging stomach or are pregnant. Please, leave this dress on the racks; it compliments no one's figure.

Giant Sunglasses

I think that these glasses have only become popular due to how silly they look on people. The truth is that only a few people can pull off wearing sunglasses that cover about half their face. On most people they just look ridiculous, and gives them a bug-eyed effect. When I went shopping with a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago, she tried on some big glasses just to see how funny they looked on her, and even though she considered buying them as a joke, she thought twice about her choice and left them at the store.
