The director of the Arizona Office of Homeland Security will teach a class at ASU this fall on homeland security.
In this position, and as the director of the Arizona Division of Emergency Management, Frank Navarrete is responsible for disaster recovery and federally declared disasters in the state. He has worked in law enforcement, intelligence and communications for more than 40 years.
"[There is] no person more eminently qualified than the state director [of Homeland Security]," said Danny Peterson, an environmental technology management professor who asked Navarrete to teach the class.
The course, which covers threats and challenges to the state's readiness, interoperability of plans and response organizations, is aimed at public administrators, and fire and law enforcement personnel.
Even though the course is for the Environmental Technology Management program at the Polytechnic campus, the class is being held at the Tempe campus. Holding the course at the Tempe campus allows ASU to stream the class online and offer it to a wider range of students.
Ryan Brown, an environmental technology management major with a focus in emergency management, said he enjoyed his first day of class with Navarrete.
Navarrete's experience in the field would translate well and help students, Brown said.
