Polytechnic Campus: Student group to take donations

A donation drive at the Polytechnic campus is being held this Saturday to gather essentials for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The drive will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Parking Lot 8. The event is sponsored by Feral Friends, a student organization that works to find homes for feral cats on campus.

The club is hoping to collect household items, furniture, nonperishable food items, unopened hygiene products, clothing and toys in good condition.

"It's a community effort," said Erin Meehan, a member of Feral Friends. "We have a full semi-truck container. We hope to fill that truck."

Meehan thought holding the drive on a Saturday would help the success of the drive, since students are "not involved in class or work."

St. Vincent de Paul, which is participating in the drive, will distribute donations to evacuee families in need.

The Polytechnic campus has 10 on-campus houses available for evacuees, but it is not known how many families will utilize those houses.

Students can also help Hurricane Katrina evacuees by purchasing Mardi Gras beads in the Student Union, donating pet supplies to the Pre-Vet Club or donating nonperishable food items to Williams Campus Housing office.

Student reactions to the drive have been positive.

"I think it's a great way for the community to come together to support Katrina evacuees," said Eric Lynch, a professional golf management junior.
