ASU Polytechnic: Grad student works to make campus life better

When things weren't working in the Polytechnic campus' student government earlier this semester, Deanna Lara made sure she fixed it.

Lara, president of the Student General Assembly at ASU's Polytechnic campus and a graduate pre-med student, was elected in April.

The student government had trouble getting in contact and finding a meeting time, but by scheduling meetings on Fridays, Lara and the rest of the student government were able to work it out.

"My purpose is to promote the student experience," Lara said. "I want to get students involved and let them know what's available to them."

As president, Lara is charged with much of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps campus activities and organizations running. Her main goals are to promote student awareness and improve campus communication, she said.

"She's very easy to work with, and seems to be popular with the students," said Dale Palmgren, associate dean in the College of Technology and Applied Sciences and Lara's thesis advisor.

Lara is a founding member and past president of the first Polytechnic sorority Sigma Alpha, which was established in 2001. She is also a member of the Tennis Club and the American Medical Association.

Lara started her academic career at the Polytechnic campus in 1997 and graduated in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in agribusiness. Lara is now a grad student in the Information and Management Technology program. She is pursuing pre-med requisites and is planning on applying for medical school.

"It's a lot of work but it's all worth it in the end," Lara said. "I like to be involved."
