RIDICULOUS AND WAY OFF BASE
(In reference to Danny O’Connor’s Feb. 8 column, “Catholic church called out.”)
Really? This is another classic case of a person believing his own propaganda. What a clueless opinion piece!
The opinion of the erstaz German-speaking theologians, probably inspired by the redoubtable Hans Küng, is nothing new, nor does it come as a surprise.
Since the 1970s they have come to believe themselves as an alternate Magisterium, conceiving the Church as just another arena for their political agitation and pressure plays.
I praise the Lord for the Catholic Church and as an observant Catholic, I hold to the unchangeable basics. If you don’t like the Church, perhaps the Episcopal Church is for you — there you’ll get all of the trappings and the utter freedom to believe whatever the heck you want. Our doors will remain open for your return.

Personally, I think your opinions are way off base. First, celibacy is given as a sign of obedience to God. Second, the actual cases of abuse would not have been mitigated if celibacy didn’t exist. Third, the priesthood is not open to women as a matter of tradition and dogma.
Fourth, the Church accepts homosexuals. Fifth, the continued anti-Catholic inflation of abuse numbers is disgusting, and the fact that you would try and use those false allegations as a reason to change almost 2,000 years of tradition is reprehensible.
Lastly, your discourteous address to Pope Benedict XVI is just sad. Whether you like him or not, he is the religious leader to a billion people. Show some class and respect.
