ADVOCATING EDUCATION CUTS

(In response to Katie Shoultz’s March 29 article, “Brewer selects USG candidate for Board of Regents.”)

Your article on March 29, titled "Brewer selects USG candidate for Board of Regents," continued to add to the concern that I have had about the Tyler for ASU ticket throughout this campaign season.

Gov. Jan Brewer, as your article points out, appointed Tyler Bowyer to the Arizona Board of Regents through a sidestepping political maneuver — completely avoiding the ASA selection process that verifies qualifications and effectiveness.

As President of the College Republicans at ASU, Mr. Bowyer has been an active supporter of Governor Brewer, and it seems that his investment in her political career is paying off. Mr. Bowyer's actions contradict his words.

He claims to be opposed to cuts to Arizona education, but he helped elect the very leader who is advocating for millions of dollars of cuts to K-12 and college education in our state. Is he going to openly reject the policies of his political ally after the political chance she took by appointing him without ASA input?

Considering his strong involvement in helping elect legislators across the state that vocalized their support for education cuts prior to the 2010 election, I'd say Bowyer rejecting those politics now is doubtful.

Regardless of the campaign message or impressive rhetoric that the Tyler for ASU campaign would like to put forth, their actions are clear. Time and time again they have supported the elected leaders in our state who are leading the crusade against education funding. Talk is nice, but after seeing their actions, it is clear that their talk is cheap and will lead to no positive results for ASU.
