A SHALLOW CONNECTION

(In response to Aug. 26 letter to the editor, “Tradition, tradition, tradition.”)

Bill Heatherly fulminates "This is not about tritons, it about tradition." This is just as well because he lost the factual argument about tritons, tridents and pitchforks.

As for tradition, he would do well to remember that before Sparky (who still resides on the football helmets, by the way) there was a bulldog, which lasted for over 20 years.

No doubt the 1940s saw the likes of Heatherly and complained about the adoption of Sparky. Are alums to be so hidebound in "tradition" that they merely see the school that educated them as being the symbol thereof and use any change as an excuse to not donate to future generations?

Heatherly would have it so, and he would be wrong. More importantly, to a Sun Devil it shouldn't matter what logo is on the shirts of the team we watch on a Saturday (or any other day).

If your connection to your alma mater is so shallow, so be it. To the rest I say "Go Devils!"

FUND IT NOW!

(In response to Oonagh McQuarrie’s Aug. 23 column, “Pointless politics is America’s new space program.”)

I’ll tell you what’s insanity, is that the US is considering not funding this project. After Hubble and all of its amazing discoveries, James Webb Space Telescope has to be funded. People complain that NASA has left behind manned spaceflight. This is more important! And the price tag is cheap.
