Hello, readers!
One of the exhibits currently on display at the ASU Art Museum, called Cu29: Mining for You, is a fun mix of interaction, information and sentiment. The exhibit is a collaboration between Arizona artist Matthey Moore and London artist Clare Patey, and focuses on the issue of copper’s endangerment and our continued dependency on it.
On Sunday, CO-OPhx held the Spring Swap PHX, a community based clothing swap and drive at the vintage stores on 6th Street in downtown Phoenix.
Yep, it’s that time again, and it’s the last time of the semester. Crafting time, woop woop!
On a Friday night I was a bit surprised to find absolutely no one else in the Bokeh Gallery (located inside monOrchid in downtown Phoenix).
Have you ever been to a burlesque show? Have you ever seen gymnastics? Have you ever seen a comedy show? Have you ever seen a dramatic play?
Yesterday I visited the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix for some artistic inspiration that I would then pass on to you lovely readers. But as you know, you can’t force good art, so the pieces I ended up with weren’t my best work. I’ll still share them with you of course, but my writing will go more towards explaining my creative process rather than analyzing my pieces.
Ok, so you watched the trailer and you’re expecting this to be just another film about girls going wild and partying on spring break, right? WRONG. That’s just what they want you to think, but this film is something different entirely . . . it’s art. Granted, the main characters are at least half naked for most of the film, but that only adds to the beauty of it.
It’s that time of the month again! Yep, that time of the month. The exact one you’re thinking of…
On Friday I attended McDowell Mountain Music Festival with fellow State Presser (Pressist?) Kylie Gumpert, and it was possibly the coolest thing I have ever covered in my time as a (wannabe) journalist.
On Sunday I went to see one of the last plays of the 2012/2013 season at The Orpheum Theater in Downtown Phoenix. The play was “Fiddler on the Roof,” an oft-performed play, but a new one to me. The play was presented at The Orpheum through Music Theatre International.
Every once in a while, I like to spend my Wednesday evenings at Phoenix Art Museum. Why Wednesdays you ask? Well frankly, because the museum offers free admission on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. until closing at 9 p.m. However! As I was meandering, I wandered into an exhibit that I would have paid to see (and believe me, that’s saying a lot).
As most of you know, on the first Friday of every month there is an influx of art exhibits and cultural events that celebrate how awesome Phoenix is and how much it has to offer.
I recently visited (for the third time now) Sarah Hurwitz’s exhibit at Eye Lounge, a contemporary art space next to Made Art Boutique at 5th and Roosevelt streets in Phoenix. One word: genius. OK, two words: hilarious genius.
On Thursday I went to Geek’s Night Out 2013 just off Mill Ave. in Tempe, and I must say I was kind of underwhelmed.
This week I am bringing to you the second installment in what can now be considered Art of the Matter’s Monthly DIY Post!
This weekend, two of my sisters and one of my brothers-in-law came from California to visit me and on Saturday. We spent the day in Sedona.
Saturday night, after experiencing the shenanigans that are the Idiotarod, I headed to Long Wong’s in Tempe for Tempe Starving Artist’s February zine release party.
Saturday marked the the seventh anniversary of the Phoenix Idiotarod, a ridiculous bar crawl that encourages outlandishly dressed teams of five to run rampant through the streets of downtown with their decorated shopping carts, stopping at checkpoints (a.k.a. bars) along the way.
^ I asked DJ and dance instructor Jonathan Lindsey for the name of one of his favorite swing songs, and after much deliberation, he gave me this one. Press play, and let the music put you in the swinging mood while you read!
