Last week, a Germanwings pilot locked himself in the cockpit and crashed the plane into a mountain, killing all 150 people aboard, including 16 schoolchildren. Investigators believe pilot Andreas Lubitz intentionally brought the plane down.

I haven't had very many jobs. When I began high school, I was a "volunteen" at a summer camp for kids—which decidedly put me off of ever reproducing. In my senior year, I was a courtesy clerk (ahem, grocery bagger) at my local supermarket; I held this job for two months before I quit because it was quite literally the most mind-numbing thing I've ever done.

For me, the decision to go to ASU was a simple one. Between nationally-renowned programs and a unique culture, the package was unbeatable with a price tag less than that of in-state tuition in my home state of California.

When your job is centered around directly doing something for someone else, there are many times when you have to swallow your pride, smile and move on. This is the essence of customer service. It's what you have to do in order to get people to come back.

Love—it’s magical in the sense that it has evolved as a basic necessity of human life; it has become an required step. You’re born, you grow up, you fall in love, you have a family, you die. Love has become as necessary as food, water and air.

Since the summer of 2014, ISIS has been grabbing headlines all across the nation for its vehement hatred of the U.S. and everything that goes against Sharia law. If anything has become apparent to me, it's that ISIS is a constantly growing force that won't just go away.Usually I'm opposed to using force when it can be avoided. However, as an aspiring war reporter and someone who believes in the right to an opinion, I believe that ISIS is a threat that needs to be met with power and strength. The request for force was the first definitive statement from President Barack Obama that said, "You are a threat to our safety; you are killing us and our allies, and we will not tolerate it."This group is a splinter cell of al-Qaida that was dismissed for its radicalism. They rely on capturing and holding territory to fund their public executions and condemnation of other cultures. I understand that this is a long road ahead and that there are many obstacles in place. The editorial board at The Washington Post points out that one of the biggest obstacles will be for ISIS's enemies — many of whom are each others' enemies as well — to work together to eliminate ISIS.I think that the reason the ISIS threat has not ignited as much fury in the American people is that they haven't committed an act against the U.S. that has been on par with the likes of Pearl Harbor or 9/11, thankfully. The downside is that it makes it harder to rally a nation behind the decision to use force. What people must realize is that even though ISIS is somewhat contained in the Middle East, it is growing at an alarming rate, is recruiting fighters from all around the world and it will not stop without decisive, swift and devastating military action.I am extremely sympathetic to those who don't want the military to engage in troop combat against ISIS. I know that if it were one of my loved ones leaving to fight an extremely hostile enemy, I would not advocate for war either. However I hope to be putting myself in that war zone because I believe that this is a story and a conflict that needs to be in the forefront of everyone's minds. The threat of ISIS doesn't scare me, but it inspires me to push myself further, as I'm sure is the truth for many others as well. It's important that we all recognize this threat. You can't ignore a single ant because it will only lead to an infestation. One dead civilian is too many, and ISIS has killed people in horrifying, grotesque and inhumane ways. Left unchecked, ISIS will get to the point where something unthinkable will happen. Stopping them now is the only way to prevent any more senseless and innocent deaths.Reach the columnist at nicole.tyau@asu.edu or follow @nicoletyau_ASU on Twitter.Editor’s note: The opinions presented in this column are the author’s and do not imply any endorsement from The State Press or its editors.Want to join the conversation? When you think of a barista and a coffee shop, you most likely think of coffee. That’s okay! When I first started, I did, too. However, there’s a road-less-taken when you go to your local java bar. Last week, I told you about some coffee concoctions and one tea drink to try. A lot of people have asked me about my “self-appointed tea expertise” and what I like when I need to mellow out.

My friends and I excitedly walk down the street from where I parked to the apartment building where we were told to go for an amazing, totally "college-y" party.

Coffee is a really big, confusing world that has limitless possibilities. Flavors change based on how you brew them, the kind of beans you use, the standards of the roaster, the syrups and add-ins and how good your barista is. Coffee is much more than just your plain ol’ drip from an air pot. My challenge to you is to venture off your beaten path and try something new the next time you go to your local coffee shop, and here are some tips and drinks to try.

The American Civil Liberties Union defines religious discrimination in part as "bridal salons, photo studios, and reception halls closing their doors to same-sex couples planning their weddings." Recently, though, this definition has been used to apply to bakeries.

In any service or retail job, you'll get at least one customer from hell. At a coffee shop, though, your customers sometimes develop these habits that are so annoying you could crush a handful of coffee beans and throw them in their face. I don't know if this is bred simply from an "I'm paying you so give me what I want" mentality or if some customers are simply ignorant. Whatever the case, here are the five most annoying things that coffee shop patrons do.

Welcome to Behind the Bar, where I will be taking you on a journey of coffee, tea, customer service and stolen tip jars. What qualifies me to be your guide? I worked for a whole year at a coffee shop in downtown Phoenix (Impressive, right?). If you're thinking Starbucks, you should stop right now.

As a Barrett sophomore, the rumors of sexual misconduct between honors faculty and students have been circulating since I first began attending the honors college. Recently, the Phoenix New Times published a very in-depth story detailing the torrid affairs and the University’s response. This story comes in the wake of ASU’s appearance on the list of universities being investigated for violation of the Title IX sexual misconduct response.
