The holidays are well-known for increased levels of anxiety, stress and depression.
The stress of final projects and exams, poor health, travel and other holiday expenses can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, especially in college, when many students are away from their families for the first time, or even those on the cusp of adulthood. For the latter, they are just beginning a transition from being a part of their parents' family and starting their own. This can be stressful in its own right, serving as a reminder of the last chances to fall back on family support.

There have been frequent guarantees that tuition at ASU would only see a slight increase, but there’s been little concerted effort, or at least it’s not been well publicized, to really keep tuition down.

Bravo to Captain Zachariah Fike of the Army National Guard for founding Purple Hearts Reunited, an organization dedicated to returning Purple Heart medals to families of veterans whose medals were lost or stolen. According to a report on NPR's "Here & Now": "(The families) would receive a registered piece of mail with this Purple Heart. A lot of the effects were not returned to the family, so this was all they had — it became that tangible item that they could touch and feel and display in their homes."

The popularity of online classes and degree programs at ASU makes it clear that online education is here to stay.

Bravo to the ASU football team for getting its first road win on Halloween in convincing fashion. Redshirt junior quarterback Taylor Kelly totaled 7 touchdowns (5 passing, 2 rushing) in a 55-21 win over WSU. This is the first time since 2007 that No. 23 ASU is in the AP top 25 so far into the football season.
(10/30/13 2:00pm)
ASU’s Undergraduate Student Government has been doing an abysmal job of involving students in the day-to-day decision-making on issues that directly affect them.

Boo to the death of Lou Reed on Oct. 27. Bravo to his lasting legacy and the joy he brought to his millions of fans from his long career in music, as a solo artist and member of the Velvet Underground.
Bravo to the ASU hockey team. The Sun Devils are ranked No. 1 in the
American Collegiate Hockey Association and have started the season with a 13-game-winning streak. ASU also extended its winning streak to 34 consecutive games over rival UA earlier this year. Senior forward Kale Dolinski leads the nation in assists (19) and points (29) in 12 games played.

At the beginning of the semester, The State Press publishedan editorial discussing several issues affecting college students, including Operation Safe and Sober, the new Walk Only Zones, a campus-wide ban on tobacco products, student loan interest rates and continuing traffic snarls resulting from construction along Rural Road. With a little more than half the semester completed, where are we now?

Bravo to Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake, along with Reps. Kyrsten Sinema, Ed Pastor, Anne Fitzpatrick, Ron Barber and Raúl Grijalva, for voting to end the 16-day-long government shutdown on Oct. 16. Boo to Reps. David Schweikert, Matt Salmon, Paul Gosar and Trent Franks for effectively voting to continue the shutdown along party lines.

Bravo to the MLB playoffs. The first four games of the League Championship Series, which include four of MLB’s most storied franchises (St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox), have been four of the best games we have seen this season and have included everything from pitchers' duels to game-tying grand slams.
Boo to the President of McDonald’s, Jeff Stratton, whose only response to a woman who can't feed and clothe her children on the pay she has received after working for the fast food giant for 10 years was, “I’ve been here for 40.” Sensitivity is obviously not his strong suit.
Bravo to the U.S. Olympic Committee for adding sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policy, adding protection for LGBTQ athletes. The decision comes four months before the start of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, which has been embroiled in controversy because of a Russian law that targets homosexuality.
Boo to a new California law that allows community colleges to charge higher tuition for in-demand courses. The law, signed Oct. 10, will permit colleges to charge higher prices to offer extension courses for classes with long waiting lists. This essentially develops a money-based "fast pass" for classes, creating a two-tiered education system based on economic wealth.
Boo-ravo to Glee's latest episode, "The Quarterback." After Cory Monteith died on July 13, heartbroken fans worried about how the beloved show would handle it, and it's clear now that the writers, cast and crew did a good job. Everyone can find a way to relate to the football-star-turned-singer-turned-military-recruit-turned-aspiring-teacher, and "The Quarterback" celebrated the fictional character Finn and the person Cory in a touching, cathartic way. As sad as we are that Monteith passed away, it was a fitting tribute.
Boo to the Oct. 13 Tea Party protests in Washington, D.C., which featured Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, former Alaska gov. Sarah Palin and Confederate flag-wavers. Attendees were protesting the closure of the World War II Memorial and the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as "Obamacare." The event bordered on ludicrous as Larry Klayman of conservative group Freedom Watch urged President Barack Obama to "to put the Quran down."

One of ASU's greatest strengths as an institution is its large population of international students and faculty who hail from places as diverse as the individuals themselves, from Malaysia to Kazakhstan to Taiwan.
(10/07/13 2:00pm)
Bravo to the "government shutdown pickup lines" Twitter trend, making fun of everyone and everything, from the president and Congress to Obamacare and parliamentary procedure. Our favorite pickup line: "Hey boy, the only non-essential thing about you are those pants."
(10/01/13 2:00pm)
Congratulations, hardworking ASU students: Apparently, you are special snowflakes who've joined the imaginary ranks of the tooth fairy, Santa Claus and the Great Pumpkin.
(09/30/13 2:00pm)
