Culture Undiscovered: ASU’s Vagina Monologues: A Discourse

Feminism has been good to me. In high school, it gave me the guts to do simple things like question what I was hearing in my Catholic school’s marriage classes and shut down idiots who said women weren’t funny, and in college it’s inspired me to demand the best for myself and others, often by getting involved more seriously in efforts to end violence against women.

Turf Talk: A Sweet Tooth for Gold

You would think 14 cherries on top of a sundae are absurd, but why not add a 15th? Arizona State men’s gymnastics did Saturday. Coach Scott Barclay said it was a cherry on top of the season to win the 2012 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships. The club claimed its 15th National Title in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the US Air Force Academy. “The guys outshined themselves,” Barclay said.

Live and Otherwise: Spring Soundtrack

Judging by the warming sunshine and the smell of spring flowers in the air, spring is upon us. So while the air conditioners are slowly being activated across the city, the hay fever of springtime music mania has also begun.

My in progress collage using the covers from the Phoenix New Times. Photo by Faith Breisblatt.

Piece of Craft: The Collage

I’m a sucker for a good collage. It’s the type of project that is just simple enough since there aren’t many materials, but when done right, can turn out amazing.  All you really need to create a good collage are glue, scissors and whatever materials you want to use.  Typically, the materials are any sort of paper, including tissue paper, newspaper and pieces of magazines or books.  You can also use other items in your collage such as ribbon, metal pieces (bottle caps or coins), or fragments of other items.  Personally, I like to stick with paper mediums.  Creating a collage just using paper allows the crafter to layer the materials, fit them together like a puzzle, or even decoupage. Right now I’m in the process of finishing up a college on canvas.  I have been using the covers of some of the latest issues (or whatever ones I have lying around my house) of the Phoenix New Times.  For this particular collage, I have cut and placed the magazine covers in different angles and shapes.  This collage is very geometric and still keeps a square shape, whereas many other collages are completely random and abstract.

Turf Talk: Sailing Onward

The last regatta of the season was but a stepping stone for Arizona State University’s sailing club. The Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference's South 5 Regatta on March 24 and 25 marked a weekend in which the team further developed as a whole.

Live and Otherwise: The Ice House Tavern

Local supporting local: There never was a sweeter statement. More importantly this is one of the best descriptions I can give of the local dive-bar treasure that is the Ice House Tavern. Located in central Phoenix, just west of Thomas Road and 40th Street, you’d never know the bar even existed without some sleuthing or recommendation via word of mouth.

Culture Undiscovered: In Defense of Burqas

On March 15, University of Chicago professor and public intellectual Martha Nussbaum came to ASU to talk about women's and human rights, a fitting topic given the current hysteria among the GOP’s presidential candidates surrounding women’s reproductive organs.

Turf Talk: Are You Ready for Some Football?

There are #thingsfasterthanvontaze. Ironically, Vontaze is a part of one of these things. The NFL is off for its usual hectic, attention-grabbing offseason and we ASU fans are anticipating the best for our Sun Devils entering the big Kahuna of football.

Maroon and Gamer: Rentals and Online Passes

Where exactly does your money go when you buy a game? Publishers make money when you purchase a game new, which in turn supports the game developer, but the used-game dollars goes to the site or retail store you purchased it from.
