The State Press

Letters to the Editor: June 27

In response to Mary Richardson’s June 13 column “Do you know if those are your underpants?” (Editor’s note: This was written before Antony Weiner’s resignation) Thank you for a thoughtful and evenhanded discussion of the Weiner incident.  I was a huge admirer of the congressman, who seemed always to be fighting for things that are important to me, but now I have decidedly mixed feelings about the whole thing.  If he had just said, "I was incredibly stupid, I hope people will forgive me," in the first place, I think most people would have done so.  He wasn't one of those who boast of their virtue, after all.  The running scared and lying, though, is less than admirable.  Apparently most of his constituents are not troubled enough to want him to resign, in any event.  If he is pressured into a complete resignation (as opposed to a "leave of absence") the Democratic party may have permanently lost a powerful voice they can ill do without.
