A $5.5 million grant recently given to the ASU nursing program by the Arizona Department of Health Services aims to help fix the statewide nursing shortage that has been ongoing since 2020. The 104 students that are accepted for the summer 2023 accelerated baccalaureate program will have their tuition and fees covered by this grant.

Growing up, Arizona Native Leila Ruterman bled maroon and gold. The daughter of proud ASU alumni, Ruterman spent her childhood gradually falling in love with the University’s culture through countless tailgates and raucous football games at Tempe’s Sun Devil Stadium, where the cheers of over 50,000 spectators rattled through her bones. To Ruterman, attending ASU was a rite of passage, a badge that would cement her as a permanent part of the community she came to love.

To improve access to higher education and increase the predictability of its costs, the Arizona Board of Regents enacted a plan to estimate and limit tuition increases. It's a step in the transition to setting tuition as far as six years in advance, rather than as a year-by-year approval process.

The Arizona Teachers Academy recently received $15 million to fund more tuition scholarships given to teachers if they stay in Arizona. This measure attempts to address Arizona's worsening teacher shortage by covering the tuition costs of aspiring teachers. Although well-intentioned, increasing teacher scholarships is a laughable Band-Aid solution that fails to resolve Arizona's escalating teacher crisis.

The Arizona Board of Regents, the governing board for Arizona's universities, approved a pay raise and contract extensions for the presidents of ASU, UA and NAU earlier this month. This means ASU’s President Michael Crow will be among them. These raises are approved based on goal achievement for the universities. The board voted unanimously to approve this increase, and no questions or comments were raised in the meeting before the vote.

This year, the Heard Museum in Phoenix joined the Master’s Fellowship in Art History, a collaborative program between ASU and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The three-year fellowship, which started in 2018 and currently has nine fellows, is designed to give people of color working in museums the skills and degrees needed to advance their careers.
