As a newspaper, there are few things we support as strongly as free speech. The ability of students to deliver news and opinions to the University community is especially important, and we hate to think of any attempt to block that from happening.

Arizona has long been on the forefront of the immigration debate. With just a fence separating Arizona from Mexico and a large number of illegal immigrants filing through our border, the state is significantly affected by the influx of undocumented immigrants.

If your life is threatened in an emergency, you want to have faith that local law enforcement will be able to get to the scene quickly. If you’re the victim of a violent crime, you want to have faith that local law enforcement will investigate thoroughly.

Bravo to the ASU Quidditch League. The club, which recently got sponsoring from the Residence Hall Association, is giving J.K. Rowling’s classically fantastical sport an ASU twist — trading out the brooms for pitchforks. We would love the idea of bringing this magical sport to life — literally, their golden snitch is a human being — we’re just jealous of the time they have to spend on the Quidditch pitch. The players may be living in a bit of a fantasy world, but on the bright side, they’ve got an easy Halloween costume idea to fall back on.

At least 132 people died Sunday in two synchronized suicide car bombings near three Iraqi government buildings in Baghdad. More than 520 people were wounded. Headlines about the deadliest coordinated attack in Iraq since the summer of 2007 splashed onto Web sites across the world, but do most Americans even know this happened?

Appropriate for the month in which all the ghouls and goblins come out for tricks and treats, Tuesday, Oct. 13 was National Face Your Fears Day. If only it had fallen on a Friday (insert evil laugh here).

The past couple of weekends have been disappointing ones for ASU sports fans. With recent losses added to the football team’s record, cries have come from near and far demanding something to change.

Bravo to the first-ever farmers market on the Tempe campus. Local vendors selling fresh fruit and healthy snacks lined the street between the Memorial Union and the bookstore Tuesday as part of Wellness Week. ASU’s push for environmentally aware and healthy food opportunities is something we can all get behind. The farmers market not only provided yummy eats (who knew gluten and soy-free cupcakes could be so tasty?) but also awareness of the local businesses ASU students can support. With luck, the farmers market will become a regular event — we’re looking forward to eating more desserts … we mean health food.

On Wednesday, new Arizona laws took effect to let licensed gun owners store firearms on most public and private properties as long as they are concealed and locked in vehicles. Meaning, gun owners can bring their guns to any one of ASU’s campuses, as long as they get left in the car.
