Stumbling through the grapevine of blogs and other Internet websites, I found myself flipping through the pages of My Roman Apartment, a blog about the arts, engineering, and anything in between that just seems the slightest bit cool and innovative. This blog is great for recipes, DIY projects, and fun ideas for revamping an apartment or your lifestyle in general.

I’ve always been interested in finding a way to make candles, but I never wanted to go through the hassle of figuring out how to make wax or getting the materials for wax. Luckily, there’s a much easier way to obtain melted wax than you would think.

I’m not a religious person by any means, but I’ve always loved the symbolic meaning of the egg. During Easter, eggs seem almost too ubiquitous; they are hidden in the plastic form for children to find or they are hard boiled to eat for the holiday or to use for crafts. For Passover, the hard boiled egg is a very important component of the Seder plate. Although both these holidays celebrate different things in their respective religions, they both use the egg in the same way: as a meaning of spring, birth, and new life.

Alisa Burke, one of my favorite crafters and bloggers, has a book entitled Canvas Remix. This book has always been at the top of my list in terms of craft books because it gives so many ideas and methods for creating mixed-media accessories. In the first section of the book, Alisa offers a seemingly infinite list of tips when using many of the materials that she uses in her work. She also supplies a list of tools and other items that she works with in many of her projects.

If you’re looking for a cool and interesting way to create your own lamp or some sort of light decoration, the first material to consider using is glass bottles. As glass is highly translucent, glass bottles of any color can make for a perfect light fixture for your home.

I’ve always really enjoyed photography and working with film. Even in many of the collages, I would use old rolls of film I either developed or I had yet to develop, creating a very vintage feel. One thing I always wanted to try to do though was create a vintage feel with my photos themselves (either using a film camera or a disposable camera) without using a digital camera and an editing program on a computer. A website I absolutely love, photojojo, shows us how to do just that.

Canvas tote bags are extremely cheap and all-too common. In this day and age when attempting to be “green” is the hip thing to do, we see tote bags with emblems and logos in all the grocery stores as well as in other shopping arenas. Although it’s easy to go out and buy one already made, you can also grab a blank one or one with a simple logo to personalize it, making the perfect beach or pool bag for the heated months ahead.

The blog Ruffled was originally started to be an inspiration for brides planning their weddings, looking for a vintage feel. It has expanded since to include many DIY home décor designs as well as DIY tutorials for wedding decorations.

When it comes to creating art, canvas has almost always been my go-to medium. Whether you’re painting, creating a collage, or doing something else artistic, canvas is great because it is a flat surface purchased ready for artistic use and to be hanged on any wall. However, over time, canvas expenses can add up. And above all, what college students need is a low-balanced budget, not one spiraling out of control due to unnecessary costs.

The other day, I was fumbling around on Etsy, just searching through all the cute handmade items and stores that this wonderful community has to offer. Through my stumbling, I happened to encounter Amie Cunningham's Thief & Bandit Etsy store. Amie originally hails from Canada, but has more recently relocated to Richmond, VA, where she uses hand-printed fabrics to make unique and handmade wearable items.

One blog I’m absolutely in love with right now is Not Ladylike by Lisa Kercher. Lisa is from Edmonton, Canada and always has so many fun crafts and other projects featured on her blog. She taught herself the basics of knitting and sewing and enjoys making things like headbands, home décor items, and paintings among others. I had the amazing opportunity to speak with Lisa about her crafting.

Not all of us are born crafty, however, many of us do appreciate arts and crafts and would love to hone our skills to be able to make one craft in particular. Others of us who are crafty are always ready and willing to learn new crafts. However, as we all know, learning something we don’t know how to do particularly well can be difficult. This is where Jam comes in.

For crafters, buttons seem to be the one craft accessory that are continuously ubiquitous.I have an entire collection of buttons just hanging around, so I know how hard it can be to find uses for them. Most people can usually find a project that uses a button here or there, but never in mass quantities, so they never know what to do with their excess buttons.I find that buttons are the perfect item to use when making jewelry. Here are some great examples of wearable button fashion:

Painting is an extremely fun art form that anyone can do. Because it’s so subjective, it doesn’t take a great artist to be able to paint a masterpiece. However, in order for you to get your artwork to the masterpiece status you desire, you may need to know a bit about some of the different painting techniques that are out there. With this in mind, here’s a brief overview of a few of my favorite painting techniques!

I’ve always found melted wax to be a fun medium to work with as the possibilities you can do with it are essentially endless. For awhile, I worked with melting crayons on canvas to make various shapes, patterns, and scenes. More recently, I have been melting crayon wax into different shapes using mini-cake pans (basically mini-cupcake pans) and the oven. This is an infamous children’s craft because it’s perfect for entertaining young kids when babysitting or if you have younger siblings. It’s also just a pretty cool craft though for anyone interested in making some pretty fun shapes with melted wax.

This past week, my friend Jenni and I decided to try our hands at creating the perfect ensemble to wear that all our friends would envy. My roommate gave us the idea of bleached shirts, which are just shirts made by bleaching out areas on the fabric to create designs or patterns. What’s great about this project is that you really don’t even need to go out and buy anything extra—the materials can essentially be found lying around the house as most people have bleach or bleach pens hanging around for keeping their whites extra white. Besides that, you can choose to go out and buy a new shirt at stores like Target, Forever 21, or H&M if you want to, but you can also just use an old favorite that you want to spice up. For our project, we bought a few shirts at H&M and also used an old shirt just because we loved this project so much—it became kind of addicting! The entire bleaching experience takes about a half hour and that includes rinsing.

I love painting, but personally, I don’t think I’m very talented. Honestly though, that’s not what’s most important. Although skill obviously plays a role, what can make or break a work of art is the technique used. One technique that I came across was using squeeze bottles filled with watery paint.

If you’ve ever wandered around downtown Phoenix near 5th and Roosevelt Streets, then odds are you know about MADE, a locally owned art boutique featuring some of Arizona’s best artists and crafters. I had the opportunity to interview Cindy Dach, a bookseller, artist, community activist, and co-owner of MADE to uncover the ins and outs of this one-of-a-kind shop.

Etsy is an ideal website designed for the crafter looking to sell their designs and find a following in the creative world. I always browse through the shops on this website when I get bored because there’s just so many great places to buy one-of-a-kind handmade items. Really, you never know what you’re going to find! The other day for instance, my roommate showed me a shop that that has amazing handmade stamped jewelry. I’m talking about Sweet Tea Shoppe’s shop of handmade goodness.
