Instant Recap: Notre Dame 37, ASU 34

Notre Dame used a late field goal to take the lead and a pick six with under two minutes remaining to put away the ASU football team and win 37-34. The Sun Devils (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) were held scoreless on the opening drive of the second half, gaining only one first down. The Fighting Irish (4-2) extended their lead to 17-13 on the next drive when junior kicker Kyle Brindza hit a 53-yard field goal, the longest of his career. Notre Dame extended its lead even further with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter after senior quarterback Tommy Rees hit junior tight end Troy Niklas for a 21-yard touchdown following a fumble from Sun Devils sophomore receiver Rick Smith. Senior cornerback Osahon Irabor brought the Sun Devils within 24-20 on the first play of the fourth quarter, intercepting Rees and returning 37 yards for the touchdown. The Irish responded on the next drive and Brindza was good on a 33-yard field goal, his third make of the game. The Sun Devils tied the game at 27 on their next possession as Kelly hooked up with redshirt junior tight end De'Marieya Nelson on a 21-yard touchdown strike. Notre Dame put together a five-minute drive following the Sun Devils touchdown but were held to a Brindza 25-yard field goal, which ended up being the game winner. The Sun Devils had two chances to take the lead at the end of the game, but Kelly threw interceptions each time, the second one the pick six returned 14 yards by redshirt senior linebacker Dan Fox. Senior running back Marion Grice caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kelly with 11 seconds remaining, but it was too little, too late.
