Sparky's Quill: Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address

Incase you missed it last week marked the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.  The actual battle of Gettysburg took place in July of 1863 and was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.  In November of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln visited the small town in Pennsylvania for the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.  He would make a short speech that was secondary to other arrangements on that day, but it was Lincoln’s words that were never forgotten. Can you name 10 great speeches in history?  Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is certainly on there (well if you are American it certainly is), but why do we all revere this as one of the greatest pieces of rhetoric in history?

Eye Candy: Geographer Concert

Geographer has to be one of my favorite bands. They’re fun, light, easy to dance to, and their live atmosphere makes even the most awkward concert-goer cut loose. If you can make it this Wednesday night at the Crescent Ballroom, go. Geographer’s artistry is not something you want to miss.

Eye Candy: The Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts

On November 9, gypsies, pirates, cowboys and some of the just plain freaky took over Roosevelt Street to celebrate the second Phoenix Annual Parade of the Arts. The only pedestrian-led, fun for all ages parade in Phoenix brought together Phoenicians of all shapes and sizes.

Literally Speaking: Semester Struggle

Nine months out of the year, doing what you enjoy takes too much effort. This is not to say that academics and outside work are not enjoyable.

Eye Candy: "Fez" Review

Blindingly bright, a simple, highly pixelated fez falls from the heavens, landing gracefully (amid twinkles) atop a cute, white humanoid’s head.
