Police Beat: July 18

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday: A Tempe man was arrested in the early morning on Friday on the 1600 block on South River Drive after investigation found that he had fled the scene of a serious accident that resulted in a serious injury, police reported.Several witnesses identified the man as the driver of the vehicle that fled the accident at 1400 South McClintock Drive earlier that night, according to a police report. The man ran over a woman’s leg, which suffered multiple fractures, and then he drove to his residence intoxicated, police reported. Once in his residence he pushed his roommate and then began throwing pool balls at mirrors, according to a report. The man admitted to fleeing the accident and consuming alcohol, but did not remember pushing the roommate or throwing pool balls, police reported. He was transported to Tempe City Jail on one count of hit and run with serious injury, one count of driving under the influence to the slightest degree, one count of assault and one count of criminal damage, according to a report. A Phoenix man was arrested shortly after midnight on Friday at the corner of Price Road and Orange Street after he provided false information to law enforcement, police reported.He was contacted while walking southbound on Price Road and gave the name “Timothy Tom” along with a false date of birth, neither of which was found in the records, according to a report. The man said he did not know his social security number and said he was 17 years old, but the date of birth he gave to the officer would have made him 18, police reporter. Police asked the man three more times for his correct name but the man continued to say it was “Timothy Tom,” according to a report. Police were able to contact the man’s girlfriend, who gave his correct name and said that he might be hiding his name because of a warrant, police reported. It was found that he did have a warrant for possession of marijuana and admitted to police that he had lied to hide it, according to a report. He was transported to Tempe City Jail and held to see a judge, police reported. A 27-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning on the 7400 block of East Osborn Road after he drove his car through a red light at the intersection of Apache and McClintock, police reported.Another car going through the green light was stuck by the man’s car and he was found passed out behind the driver’s seat, according to a police report. The Tempe Fire Department removed the man from the vehicle and began to medically examine him, which was when he was seen swaying and had difficulty maintaining his balance, police reported. During the questioning he was overheard saying, “Right now, I’m so intoxicated so I don’t know what is going on,” according to a report. He was then transported to Scottsdale Osborn and drew a blood reading of .243, police reported. It was found that he was driving on a suspended license and had several warrants out for his arrest for previous DUI incidents, according to a report. Police Beat: July 5

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Monday: A 47-year-old man was arrested early in the morning on June 28 on the 1500 block of East Apache Boulevard after he was seen throwing a newspaper stand through the front window of a restaurant, police reported. The man was found inside the establishment, Khai Hoan Restaurant, where he claimed to be helping a friend named “Mary,” according to a police report. Police searched the restaurant but no one was found, police reported. Items inside were moved and appeared to have been searched through, according to a report. He was transported to Tempe City Jail on one count of third degree burglary, police reported. A 27-year-old Scottsdale man was arrested at midnight on June 27 after it was discovered that he had fired two rounds from a pistol in the air at the 1300 block of East Broadway Road, police reported. The man fled the scene but later returned and was ordered out of his car at gunpoint, according to a police report. The magazine from the gun fell to the ground as he exited the vehicle and the pistol was found in the center consol, police reported. He admitted to firing the gun in the air but said it was in response to being shot at by an unknown man, according to a report. Police searched the area but did not find the man or any shell casings.

Rather than using a traditional “beat” system where officers patrol certain areas, the computer-aided dispatch, or CAD system, tracks emergencies and officers’ whereabouts in real time.

Police Beat: June 27

Tempe Police reported the following incident Sunday: Two Gilbert brothers, ages 24 and 22, were arrested in the early morning of June 5 on the 20 block of East 6th Street after assaulting a security guard, police reported. The younger brother was previously removed by a security guard from Robbie Fox’s, a bar located on the 600 block of South Mill Avenue, and told his older brother that he had been assaulted by the bouncers while he was in the restroom and that they had almost killed him, according to a police report. The two brothers returned to the bar and waited in their car until police contacted them, at which point they said they were waiting for a friend, police reported. A half hour later the two men exited the vehicle and approached the bouncer that had removed the younger brother from the bar, according to a report. When another employee from a local business tried to intervene, the younger brother struck the bouncer several times in the head and neck with a tire iron, police reported. The bouncer suffered lacerations, swelling and abrasions to the areas he was hit, according to a report. The older brother was carrying a dangerous instrument and hit an assisting bouncer in the face, police reported. Other employees who were alerted of the attack eventually detained the two men, according to a report. Both men were transported to Tempe City Jail on counts of aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument, police reported. Reports compiled by Nathan Meacham.

Police Beat: June 20

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday: A 23-year-old Phoenix man was arrested on the corner of South Priest Drive and La Jolla Drive in the early morning on June 13 for reckless discharge of a firearm at a complex along La Jolla Drive, police reported. A witness saw the man get into a fight with some people at the pool and was then seen grabbing an assault rifle from his BMW SUV, according to a police report. The man then held the gun toward the men he was fighting with and started yelling that he could take them all on, police reported. Three women tried to calm the man down while the other men fled the scene, according to a report. The witness then saw the man walking with the three women out of the complex, which was when a gunshot was heard coming from their location, police reported. The three women then ran back to the SUV with the man, which was stopped just outside the complex by police, according to a report. The gun was recovered in the back seat of the SUV and he admitted to firing off the gun into the dirt, police reported. It was found that the man had previously been arrested for aggravated assault of a police officer and was placed on probation, according to a report. He was held to see a judge on one count of prohibited possession of a firearm and one count reckless discharge of a firearm, police reported. A 20-year-old Chandler man was arrested early in the morning on June 12 on the 5000 block of South Priest Drive on suspicion of minor in consumption and later aggravated assault of a police officer, police reported. The man was contacted in his room, which was suspected to have underage marijuana users in it, according to a police report. He admitted to drinking five beers and was placed in the back of a Tempe Police vehicle, at which point he began spitting at the officer, police reported. When the man realized he couldn’t spit on the officer because of the divider between the front and back seat, he unzipped his pants and urinated in the vehicle, according to a report. He began threatening the officer and said he was going to torture the officer and his wife and children, and also find where the officer lives and kill his family, police reported. The man was then removed from the vehicle and placed against a wall, at which point he turned to the officer and spit in his face, according to a report. He was then taken to the ground and held there until detention officers could transport him into the jail, police reported. He was held on one count of aggravated assault of law enforcement, one count minor in consumption and one count of criminal damage, according to a report. Police Beat: June 13

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday: A 27-year-old Queen Creek man was arrested early Wednesday morning on the 1000 block of South Longmore in Mesa on suspicion of aggravated assault after an investigation found the man had entered a woman’s apartment without permission on the 1800 block of East Broadway Road on the night of May 23, police reported.The man threatened a woman in the apartment with a knife during an argument where the man claimed the apartment owner     owed him $5-$10, according to a police report. The woman said the man grabbed her by both arms and pushed her to the floor after arguing about the man leaving, police reported. She also said the man attempted to kick her while she was on the ground and had a kitchen knife in his right hand, according to a report. He then began punching her in the face, neck and arms and she sustained a small laceration on a finger during the attack, police reported. A witness assisted the woman by “bear hugging” the man and carrying him outside the apartment, according to a report. The man fled the scene and was later picked out of a photographic line-up by the victim, police reported. He was picked up on Wednesday night and during an interview admitted to entering the apartment uninvited, according to a report. The man said he left the apartment but attempted to take the knife away from the woman, police reported. He denied punching or kicking the victim and said he was not trying to assault her and had suffered a cut on his finger during the incident, according to a report. The man was transported to Tempe City Jail on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of first degree burglary, police reported. A 22-year-old Topeka, Kan.

Police Beat: May 31

Tempe Police reported the following incidents Monday: A 22-year-old Mesa man was arrested Wednesday night on the corner of North Evergreen Road and East Oakleaf Drive in Tempe for disorderly conduct after he was reportedly screaming and cursing for several minutes, police reported. A small bag of marijuana was found in the man’s pant’s pocket after a police search and he admitted it was his for personal use, police reported, according to a police report. The man was transported to Tempe City Jail on one count of disorderly conduct, police reported. A 35-year-old Phoenix man was arrested in the early morning on May 25 on the 300 block of West Lakeview Drive after allegedly trespassing the light rail bridge, police reported. The man was reportedly first contacted by light rail security while still on the bridge, according to a police report. It was later found that he had a warrant for a probation violation and was transported to Tempe City Jail, police reported. A 21-year-old Tempe man was arrested on the night of May 23 after allegedly discharging a firearm recklessly while walking through an apartment complex on the 2000 block of South McClintock Drive, police reported. The man was wearing a belt holster and reportedly tried to remove the holster and the gun at the same time after it began to feel uncomfortable, according to a police report. He stated that the gun came out of the holster and a round was fired into the ground in front of his feet while approximately five residents were standing nearby, police report. The man said that he had only owned the gun for a month, didn’t know it was loaded and had never shot it before, according to a report. He was transported to Tempe City Jail on one count of disorderly conduct and reckless discharge of a firearm, police reported. A 31-year-old Tempe woman was arrested in the early morning on May 22 for allegedly trespassing at an apartment complex on the 1200 block of East Vista Del Cerro Drive after she allegedly forced her way into one of the apartments, police reported. The woman would not answer when the resident asked who was at the door and it was too dark outside to see through the peephole, according to a police report, according to a police report. When the victim cracked open the door, the woman reportedly forced her way inside and began trashing the living room and attempted to remove her clothes, police reported. The resident had never seen the woman before and hid in the bathroom until police arrived at the scene. Police found the woman sleeping on the couch where she had also urinated, according to a report. She showed several signs of intoxication and was transported to Tempe City Jail, police reported.
