Downtown Dispatch: Tammie Coe Deliciousness

Tammie Coe Cakes, one of my favorite sandwich shops, is just down the street from the ASU downtown campus, and is the perfect place for an afternoon lunch date. Tammie Coe Cakes, located right off of Roosevelt and 6th Street, features sandwiches of all kinds, made on the famous MJ Breads that many locals have come to love (they also sell it at La Grande Orange Grocery), as well as yummy pastries, cookies, cakes, coffee, and tea.

Geekin’ It: /b/ and Online Communities

4Chan, Reddit, and thousands of other online communities are the backbone of Internet culture. This week, we’re going to take a look at what compromises these sites and how to start getting involved. 4Chan is described by its users as an “Internet Hate Machine.” 4Chan is a Chan-type message board—a term that comes from the shortened “channel” where users can post images.

Non-Required Reading: Comics Working Backwards

It’s the week before the week of spring break. Do you know what that means? Absolutely nothing. So, you know how most of the time I talk about comics being adapted into properties that you wouldn’t normally expect? Well, as we’ve firmly established, comics sometimes cross mediums, whether it’s into movies, video games, TV, or what have you. Sometimes though, comics accept licensed properties into their fold and the entire process works backwards. Look to Star Trek, Star Wars, G.I.

Downtown Dispatch: First Friday Fun

First Fridays is coming up this week and I thought it would be nice to share with you a little history on the event, as well as some tips about where to go, where to park, and what you shouldn’t miss while out during FF. During the past several years, FF has seen some major changes.

Geekin’ It: BOTW Top iPhone Apps

Last week, I took a look at what it’s like to switch from Android to an iPhone. In this week’s “Best of the Web,” we’re going to take a look at some apps that every new iPhone user should at least take a look at. Buy: Dead Space iOS - $6.99 Dead Space iOS is one of those technical marvels that you didn’t think would translate well to an iPhone.

Live and Otherwise: Young The Giant

What’s in a name? Well something big in the case of my indie pick for this week. Young The Giant (YTG), a California-based indie rock quintet, will be gracing the stage at our very own Rhythm Room in Phoenix later this week.

Other than Ramen: The Hidden Gem Named Essence

If you’ve driven along University Drive, chances are you’ve driven past the hidden gem known as Essence Bakery Café. Right off of Priest Drive and down the road from Buffalo Exchange and Oregano’s, this dining spot features French-inspired cuisine and award-winnings pastries. Walk through the doors of Essence around breakfast time and your senses will be transported to a Parisian café. The smell of eggs and bacon wafts through the air and the sight of the pastry case lined with croissants and desert delicacies will leave you in awe. Start your day like the French do: indulge in a freshly baked Double Chocolate-Bar Croissant ($2.75) and a cappuccino or iced coffee.

Palm Walk Runway: More Than Just A Frat Shoe

Now, just by hearing the brand name Sperry, many of you are probably automatically associating the shoe with the “frat guy." However, Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes are going to be making their appearance more often on both guys and girls this spring. Sperry’s are not a new brand by any means, but with new vibrant and bright colors that stray from the original brown color, the boat shoe is giving spring a whole new meaning. Although Sperry’s may not be authentic and associated to Arizona, the shoe can give an outfit that preppy and fashion-forward look, and better yet, they are easy to slip off and on. There is literally a style and color for everyone this season.

Non-Required Reading: Why It’s Hard to Understand Marvel Comics

If you understand roughly half of what that poster means, then you don’t need to bother to read this article. Two main complaints you get from non-comic readers about comics themselves are complete opposites. Oftentimes, people claim that comics aren’t legitimate reading material, that they are kid stuff and something designed to be ignored by the masses. To you I say "Nay!" But we’ll get into that at some later date. Today’s blog revolves around those of you who claim “comics are too hard to get into." Superman’s been around for over one bajillion years (I’m rounding here), so how could I possibly know where to start? Well, long story short, you’re right.

Revolver Records keeps it spinning. Photo by Chelsea Brown.

Downtown Dispatch: Revolver Records Brings the Old and New

Right off of Roosevelt Road and 2nd Street in downtown Phoenix sits a small, jam-packed record shop that carries everything from records to movies to record players. Revolver Records has been a staple in downtown Phoenix since 2007 and is a great place to spend a few hours in if you’re in need of a good record hunt or just want to get out of your dorm/apartment/house.
